Strain‐based modeling and analysis for rock blasting and geomechanics applications

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This paper introduces a novel strain‐based modeling approach for blasting and geomechanical applications, using measurable variables like particle velocity, strain, and displacement. By bypassing complex constitutive relations, strain‐based models capture critical blasting trends and full‐blast design parameters with minimal calibration.

Optimisation of practically constrained waveforms for Rician target detection with multiple‐input‐multiple‐output radar

open access: yesIET Radar, Sonar & Navigation, 2022
In this paper, the waveform design for Rician target detection with multiple‐input‐multiple‐output radar is addressed. The relative entropy between the distributions of the observations under two hypotheses is employed as the design metric.

The lowermost last‐glacial equilibrium line altitude in the Taiwanese Central Mountain Range and its implications for the palaeoclimate and the tropospheric moisture transport in East Asia

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract The high mountains of Taiwan provide a unique location for Quaternary palaeoclimate research in East Asia and the north‐western Pacific. This study applies geomorphological field mapping and rock surface exposure dating with paired (10Be/26Al) in situ‐produced terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides to identify and date glacial landforms and boulders ...

Signal processing algorithm for helicopter wideband noise non-coherent radar altimeter

open access: yesАвіаційно-космічна техніка та технологія, 2022
The algorithm for a helicopter or an unmanned aerial vehicle flight altitude measuring based on the processing of broadband and ultra-wideband pulsed stochastic signals has been synthesized for the first time by the maximum likelihood method.

Modulations of local rainfall in northeast Australia associated with the Madden–Julian oscillation during austral summer

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The variation of rainfall and its diurnal cycle with the Madden–Julian oscillation over coastal regions of NE Australia exhibit both large‐scale and local‐scale influences. The widespread increased rainfall is driven by large‐scale forcings, while the local enhanced rainfall is likely affected by mesoscale coastal processes. The variation of convective

Abrupt ending of the Madden–Julian Oscillation by convectively coupled Kelvin wave precipitation leaves a swath of flooding across Indonesia

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
During July 2021 there were widespread reports of flooding across the equatorial Maritime Continent. This analysis reveals how interactions between a system of convectively coupled Kelvin waves (CCKWs) and diurnally phase‐locked westward‐propagating inertio‐gravity waves during an active Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) caused these extreme rainfall ...

Constant envelope OFDM RadCom fusion system

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, 2018
A joint radar and wireless communication (RadCom) fusion system is an important trend for future intelligent transportation, such as the Internet of Vehicles (IOV). However, traditional joint orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based RadCom

Controls on ERS altimeter measurements over ice sheets: Footprint-scale topography, backscatter fluctuations, and the dependence of microwave penetration depth on satellite orientation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We consider the reliability of radar altimeter measurements of ice sheet elevation and snowpack properties in the presence of surface undulations. We demonstrate that over ice sheets the common practice of averaging echoes by aligning the first return ...

A consistent coupling of two‐moment microphysics and bulk ice optical properties, and its impact on radiation in a regional weather model

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel, consistent coupling of two‐moment microphysics (i.e., ice mass mixing ratio and number) with bulk ice optical properties, providing improved accuracy in radiative transfer simulations. The parametrisations, based on the mass‐equivalent spherical radius, avoid uncertainties associated with the effective radius by directly ...
