Envy and Inequality* [PDF]

AbstractWe present an overlapping generations economy, populated by heterogeneous agents who care about both consumption relative to others and the bequest they leave to their offspring. We show that saving and bequest rates vary across the income distribution, and we obtain several interesting results.

Inequality and envy [PDF]

Our purpose is to examine the “envy” within the context of income inequality measurement. We use a simple axiomatic structure that takes into account “envy” in the income distribution. The concept of envy incorporated here concerns the distance of each person's income from his or her immediately richer neighbour.
