Environment-related health risks, knowledge and awareness among people in precarious milieus: secondary data analysis from the German “Environmental Awareness Study”

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health
IntroductionPrecarious milieus more frequently suffer from environmental risks and show lower environmental awareness and behavior than other milieus in the German population.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Motivating residents to combat invasive species on private lands: social norms and community reciprocity

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2016
Invasive species (IS) threaten biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. To achieve landscape-scale reductions in IS and the associated gains for biodiversity, IS control efforts must be expanded across private lands.

Measurement of Environmental Concern: A Review and Analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2020
Growing concern about the seriousness of issues such as climate change has made the value of research on social and behavioral aspects of environmental problems clearer than ever.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The People Paradox: Self-Esteem Striving, Immortality Ideologies, and Human Response to Climate Change

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2009
In 1973, Ernest Becker, a cultural anthropologist cross-trained in philosophy, sociology, and psychiatry, invoked consciousness of self and the inevitability of death as the primary sources of human anxiety and repression.

Sustainability in Youth: Environmental Considerations in Adolescence and Their Relationship to Pro-environmental Behavior

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2020
Adolescents today face the negative outcomes of climate change, and their pro-environmental behavior is crucial to mitigate these negative outcomes. Yet, we know little about what influences adolescents’ pro-environmental behavior.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

How does global literacy affect environmental behavior? The mediating role of eco-anxiety

open access: yesEcology and Society
The asymmetric relationship between humans and nature and the escalating ecological crises have revealed the need for a profound transformation in individuals’ perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors toward the environment.
