Environmental Chemical Engineering

1991
As environmental regulations have expanded and the technology being controlled has become more advanced, the associated chemical engineering problems have grown more complex. Chemical engineers have had prominent roles in the development of stack gas scrubbing technologies, in understanding the mechanisms of particle and NO_x, formation in coal ...

Engineered Biosensors in an Encapsulated and Deployable System for Environmental Chemical Detection

ACS Sensors, 2022
The long-term exposure of low levels of the fungicide, 2-phenylphenol (2-PP), to the environment presents a hazard to human and aquatic health. The cost and difficulty in large-scale production limit the use of existing sensors to detect 2-PP for applications such as personal protection and persistent environmental monitoring of large areas.

Environmental Engineering and Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

Journal of Environmental Engineering, 2002
Endocrine disruptors are a class of chemicals of growing interest to the environmental community. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ~EPA! Risk Assessment Forum defined an endocrine disrupting chemical ~EDC! as ‘‘an exogenous agent that interferes with the synthesis, secretion, transport, binding, action, or elimination of natural hormones in ...

Environmental biotechnology: Challenges and opportunities for chemical engineers

AIChE Journal, 2005
Over the past few decades enormous quantities of industrial pollutants have been released into the environment. A large number of them, particularly those structurally related to natural compounds, are readily degraded or removed by microorganisms found in soil and water.

Poor efficiency of TiO2 by visible light and the fast recombination rate of electron/hole pairs remain significant challenges in photocatalytic applications of TiO2 in water treatment. In this study, graphene was used to enhance TiO2 photocatalytic activity by reducing electron-hole pair recombination.
