Hotspots, Heat Vulnerability and Urban Heat Islands: An Interdisciplinary Review of Research Methodologies

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Remote Sensing, 2020
As a result of ongoing global warming, approximately 30% of the world's population lives in areas where the temperature reaches the death risk threshold at least 20 days a year. The distribution of heat and vulnerability, however, varies in a city; where

'Freedom’s Ramparts on The Sea': The postcolonial New Zealand landscape and the quest for sustainability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
New Zealand’s colonial legacy has had a major impact on the shape of its landscape. The European settlement of New Zealand transformed both the land itself as well as the tenure arrangements that had hitherto followed traditional Maori practices.

Nutrient cross-feeding in the microbial world. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The stability and function of a microbial community depends on nutritional interactions among community members such as the cross-feeding of essential small molecules synthesized by a subset of the population.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Can culture be solely inferred from the absence of genetic or environmental factors ? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Rendell & Whitehead's minimalist definition of culture does not allow for the important gaps between cetaceans and Inimans. A more complete analysis reveals important discontinuities that may be more instnictive for comparative purposes than the ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
