Cross-cultural comparison of genetic and cultural transmission of smoking initiation using an extended twin kinship model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background: Considerable evidence from twin and adoption studies indicates that genetic and shared environmental factors play a role in the initiation of smoking behavior.

Cutaneous Melanoma Drives Metabolic Changes in the Aged Bone Marrow Immune Microenvironment

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increasingly affects older adults. Our study reveals that melanoma induces changes in iron and lipid levels in the bone marrow, impacting immune cell populations and increasing susceptibility to ferroptosis.

Significance of the “pollutant pays” principle and the analysis of the Еuropean framework for a civil liability for damages caused by activities dangerous to the environment

open access: yesPravo, 2021
The right to a healthy environment is an absolute priority of the modern society. A specific economic instrument aimed at protecting the environment at a global level is the compensation for environmental pollution, based on a principle of environmental ...

Shared Genetic Effects and Antagonistic Pleiotropy Between Multiple Sclerosis and Common Cancers

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Epidemiologic studies have reported inconsistent altered cancer risk in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Factors such as immune dysregulation, comorbidities, and disease‐modifying therapies may contribute to this variability.

Effective Sliding Motions of Vibration‐Induced Emission Stoppers in Mechanically Interlocked Molecules as Artificial Muscle Tougheners and In Situ Molecular Shuttling Sensors for Self‐Healable Mechano‐Fluorescent Polyurethane Organogels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The self‐healable ratiometric mechano‐fluorescent polyurethane (PU) organogel is constructed by incorporating a minor amount (ca. 1.5 wt.%) of the unconventional daisy chain rotaxane (as an artificial molecular muscle toughener) with specific sliding motions and ratiometric emission behaviors into the PU skeleton, which reveals the progressed intrinsic

Environmental Liability Under Uncertain Causation

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2008
Recently, the European Commission has issued the Directive 2004/35/CE on environmental liability with regard to the prevention and remedying of environmental liability. The Directive extends liability that usually refers to personal injuries and private property to harm where private property does not exist (e.g.

Examining the independent and joint effects of molecular genetic liability and environmental exposures in schizophrenia: results from the EUGEI study

open access: yesWorld Psychiatry, 2019
Schizophrenia is a heritable complex phenotype associated with a background risk involving multiple common genetic variants of small effect and a multitude of environmental exposures.

From Waste to Value: Conversion of Calcium Sulfate to Vaterite via Carbon Capture and Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a new concept for carbon management that relies on the carbonation of industrial gypsum waste and yields phase‐pure vaterite at ambient conditions without any additives. The obtained vaterite is further shown to be a reactive material that develops compressive strength in aqueous suspensions like conventional cements.

Molecularly Engineered Highly Stable Memristors with Ultra‐Low Operational Voltage: Integrating Synthetic DNA with Quasi‐2D Perovskites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Molecularly engineered memristors integrating Ag nanoparticle–embedded synthetic DNA with quasi‐2D halide perovskites enable ultra‐low‐operational voltage, forming‐free resistive switching, and record‐low power density. This synergistic integration of customized DNA and 2D OHP in bio‐hybrid architecture enhances charge transport, reduces variability ...
