Industrial and environmental applications of halophilic microorganisms [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Technology, 2010
In comparison with the thermophilic and the alkaliphilic extremophiles, halophilic microorganisms have as yet found relatively few biotechnological applications. Halophiles are involved in centuries-old processes such as the manufacturing of solar salt from seawater and the production of traditional fermented foods.

Simulating and predicting the flux change of reverse osmosis membranes over time during wastewater reclamation caused by organic fouling

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2020
During the operation of the RO system, it’s significant to predict the flux change over time. Previous research conducted detailed exploration on the dynamics of RO membrane fouling, and provided a solid database for modelling.

Critical minority fractions causing membrane fouling in reclaimed water: Fouling characteristics, mechanisms and control strategies

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2023
In regard to membrane-based technologies of wastewater reclamation, the reported key foulants were faced with dilemma that they could not be effectively separated and extracted from reclaimed water for thorough investigation.

Vacuum ultraviolet irradiation for reduction of the toxicity of wastewater towards mammalian cells: Removal mechanism, changes in organic compounds, and toxicity alternatives

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2023
Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, 185 + 254 nm) irradiation performs well for oxidation of model pollutants. However, oxidation of pollutants does not necessarily lead to a reduction in toxicity.

Characterizing the molecular weight distribution of dissolved organic matter by measuring the contents of electron-donating moieties, UV absorbance, and fluorescence intensity

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2020
Electron-donating moieties (EDM) have recently been used to characterize the redox properties and treatability of dissolved organic matter during water and wastewater treatment.

Simulation and Experimental Study on the Shrub-Cutting Performance of Quasi-Planetary Cutter

open access: yesApplied Sciences
To evaluate the performance of quasi-planetary cutting tools, three shrubs were selected and studied using a combination of numerical simulation and cutting test bench experiments. Based on the constitutive model of shrub material and LS-DYNA simulation,

Editorial: Environmental phytoremediation: plants and microorganisms at work [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2015
Human industry, farming, and waste disposal practices have resulted in the large-scale contamination of soil and water with organic compounds and heavy metals, with detrimental effects on ecosystems and human health. Conventional soil remediation methods are expensive and often involve the storage of soil in designated areas, postponing rather than ...

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

Adsorption of neutral and negatively charged low-molecular-weight carbonyls in reverse osmosis permeates by ion-exchange resins

open access: yesWater Cycle, 2022
Reverse osmosis (RO) has been increasing widely used in water and wastewater treatment to provide high-quality water, such as in industrial pure water production and municipal (non)potable water reuse.
