Communicating Status and Trends in Environmental Quality: Reactions of Legislative Staff, Reporters, Activists, and Citizens

open access: yes, 2003
When agencies wish to communicate the status or trend in an environmental condition, they often use quantitative information, particularly in the form of a chart or graph. This research project summary explores how various audiences would react to visual

Relationship between bmi and glomerular filtration rate in a large cohort initiating a weight loss program: differential contributions of fat mass, fat-free mass, and abdominal fat compartments

open access: yesNutrition Journal
Background The relationship between BMI and chronic kidney disease is controversial, likely due to the inability of BMI to accurately define body composition and adipose tissue distribution.

Determinants of Glucose Tolerance in a Population Without Overt Diabetes: The Role of β-Cell Glucose Sensitivity, Insulin Sensitivity, and Insulin Clearance

open access: yesMetabolites
Background/Objectives: To investigate how β-cell glucose sensitivity, insulin clearance, and insulin sensitivity interact to determine glucose tolerance in a population without overt diabetes.

Indicator-based assessment of marine biological diversity – lessons from 10 case studies across the European Seas

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2016
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive requires the environmental status of European marine waters to be assessed using biodiversity as one out of 11 descriptors, but the complexity of marine biodiversity and its large span across latitudinal and ...

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Bridging the gap between policy and science in assessing the health status of marine ecosystems

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2016
Human activities, both established and emerging, increasingly affect the provision of marine ecosystem services that deliver societal and economic benefits.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Short-term effects of Mediterranean diet on nutritional status in adults affected by Osteogenesis Imperfecta: a pilot study

open access: yesOrphanet Journal of Rare Diseases
Background Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous group of connective tissue disorders, characterized by varying degrees of skeletal fragility.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
