Strong Lead‐Free Bioinspired Piezoceramics for Durable Energy Transducers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We fabricated brick‐and‐mortar lead‐free piezoceramics with Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 monocrystal platelets as bricks and amorphous silica as mortar. The alignment of the bricks and the presence of the amorphous silica led to anisotropic residual stresses. These residual stresses increase the samples toughness, strength and durability while the brick alignment ...

Development of an Expert System for Fractography of Environmentally Assisted Cracking

open access: yesTRANSACTIONS OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Series A, 1994
An expert system that diagnoses the causes of failure of environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) based upon fractography has been developed. The system uses the OPS83 programming language, expressing rules in the manner of production rules, and is composed of three independent subsystems, which respectively deal with EACs of high-strength or high ...

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Chitin‐Derived Carbon‐Metal Functional Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Functional carbon materials are synthesized from combination of biopolymer (chitin) and iron precursors. The resultant material exhibits superior surface area and adsorptive properties compared to carbon materials synthesized directly from pure chitin.

Determination of fracture mechanics parameters structural components with surface crack under thermomechanical loads [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Technical Review, 2016
Rotational components of aero engine turbine are the most important components. It operates at high temperature and under conditions of extreme environmental attack such as oxidation, corrosion and wear.

The Initiation of Environmentally Assisted Cracking in Semi-Elliptical Surface Cracks [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 1998
A Criterion to predict under what conditions EAC would initiate in cracks in a high-sulfur steel in contact with low-oxygen water was recently proposed by Wire and Li (1996). This EAC initiation criterion was developed using transient analyses for the diffusion of sulfides plus experimental test results. The experiments were conducted mainly on compact

Bacterial Cellulose‐Based Bilayer Passive Cooler for High‐Performance Radiative/Evaporative Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A sustainable bilayer passive cooler based on bacterial cellulose integrates radiative and evaporative cooling for efficient zero‐energy temperature reduction. The scalable, low‐carbon material shows strong potential for food preservation, low‐temperature storage, and cold‐chain logistics.

Applied Stress Affecting the Environmentally Assisted Cracking [PDF]

open access: yesMetallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2013
Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is affected by the mode of applied stress, i.e., tension, compression, or torsion. The cracking is measured in terms of initiation time to nucleate a crack or time to failure. In a simple uniaxial loading under tension or compression, it is observed that the initiation time can vary in orders of magnitude depending on ...

Gradient‐Conductivity Architecture Enables Synchronous Enhancement of Sensitivity and Detection Range in Multifunctional All‐Paper Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A gradient‐engineered all‐paper sensor is fabricated by integrating MXene and in situ grown AgNPs within hierarchical cellulose networks. The device breaks the sensitivity–detection range trade‐off through cascaded conductive pathways, enabling ultrahigh pressure sensitivity, humidity–pressure decoupled dual‐mode sensing, and outstanding EMI shielding,
