Studies on Antibiotics and Enzyme Inhibitors
Clinical Infectious Diseases, 1987I have been studying antibiotics since 1944. In 1951, pathogenic bacteria resistant to antibiotic drugs had not yet appeared, and it seemed that effective chemotherapy for all bacterial diseases except tuberculosis was a fait accompli. Therefore, I initiated screening for antibiotics active against tumors.

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors
Pharmaceutisch Weekblad Scientific Edition, 1982Inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) in patients suffering from renovascular hypertension results in lowering of the blood-pressure. The development of captopril, an orally active ACE inhibitor and the structure-activity relationship of captopril analogues are described.

Enzyme inhibitors of microbial origin
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. B, Biological Sciences, 1980The screening for enzyme inhibitors of microbial origin in the past decades has been a prosperous area to find new metabolites that are of potential importance as therapeutic or antibiotic agents. This review attempts a survey of recent achievements in this type of screening.

Mechanistic insight and structural information provide the starting points for two contrasting approaches to the design of enzyme inhibitors. Phosphorus-containing peptides are inhibitors of the zinc and aspartic peptidases that mimic key geometric and electronic characteristics of the transition states of these enzymes.
