Epidemics of meningococcal meningitis in Northern Nigeria focus on preventive measures

open access: yesAnnals of African Medicine, 2018
Throughout the past 200 years, epidemics of meningococcal infection have been noted in Northern Nigeria. Consequently, control of meningococcal meningitis is one of the major priorities in infection control in the region. The proportions of cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) caused by the five common serotypes (A, B, C, Y, and W135) vary ...

Precision Editing of NLRS Improves Effector Recognition for Enhanced Disease Resistance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Precision engineering of plant NLR immune receptors enables rational design of enhanced pathogen resistance through mismatched pairing, domain swapping, and targeted mutagenesis. These approaches achieve multi‐fold expansion in recognition breadth while minimizing autoimmunity risks and fitness penalties.

NAFLD‐related hepatocellular carcinoma: The growing challenge

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Risk and protective factors for NAFLD‐related hepatocellular carcinoma Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common cause of cancer‐related mortality and morbidity worldwide. With the obesity pandemic, NAFLD‐related HCC is contributing to the burden of disease exponentially.

Verification of Mathematical Models of Plague

open access: yesПроблемы особо опасных инфекций, 2012
Mathematic modeling and prognostication of infectious diseases epidemic process is a promising trend of epidemiologic investigations. The complex of mathematic models (SEIRF type) of plague epidemic process was developed for this purpose by the Russian ...

Non‐Targeting shRNA‐Encoded Plasmid DNA Enhances Protective Immunity Through RIDD‐RIG‐I Signaling Pathway in the Zika Virus Animal Model

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We present a novel DNA vaccine platform featuring intrinsic, non‐targeting dsRNA that significantly enhances immune responses by activating the regulated IRE1‐dependent decay‐RIG‐I signaling pathway. This research elucidates a previously uncharacterized mechanism for dsRNA‐mediated innate immune activation.

Health disparities in chronic liver disease

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract The syndemic of hazardous alcohol consumption, opioid use, and obesity has led to important changes in liver disease epidemiology that have exacerbated health disparities. Health disparities occur when plausibly avoidable health differences are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations.

Selenoprotein H Functions as a PPARα Coactivator to Link Selenium Homeostasis to Hepatic Lipid Metabolism and Protect against Steatohepatitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Our study identifies selenium deficiency as a hallmark of MASH pathogenesis. Dietary selenium supplementation enhances hepatic fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and attenuates MASH progression by activating the PPARα pathway via selenoprotein H (SELENOH). This selenium‐SELENOH‐PPARα nexus redefines the functional scope of selenoproteins, moving from redox ...
