Noninvasive evaluation of the barrier properties of the skin [PDF]

open access: yesСаратовский научно-медицинский журнал, 2014
Skin as an organ of protection covers the body and accomplishes multiple defensive functions. The intact skin represents a barrier to the uncontrolled loss of water, proteins, and plasma components from the organism.

Thematic review series: Skin Lipids. Pathogenesis of permeability barrier abnormalities in the ichthyoses: inherited disorders of lipid metabolism

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2008
Many of the ichthyoses are associated with inherited disorders of lipid metabolism. These disorders have provided unique models to dissect physiologic processes in normal epidermis and the pathophysiology of more common scaling conditions.

The pH of the skin surface and its impact on the barrier function [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The `acid mantle' of the stratum corneum seems to be important for both permeability barrier formation and cutaneous antimicrobial defense. However, the origin of the acidic pH, measurable on the skin surface, remains conjectural.

The IL‐13/periostin/IL‐24 pathway causes epidermal barrier dysfunction in allergic skin inflammation

open access: yesAllergy. European Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2018
Barrier dysfunction is an important feature of atopic dermatitis (AD) in which IL‐4 and IL‐13, signature type 2 cytokines, are involved. Periostin, a matricellular protein induced by IL‐4 or IL‐13, plays a crucial role in the onset of allergic skin ...

PEDOT‐Based Eutectogel Electrode Arrays for Enhanced High‐Resolution Electrogastrography: Fabrication, Stability, and Wearable Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Here, we present a high‐density PEDOT eutectogel electrode array for enhanced body surface gastric mapping. Silver electrodes are blade‐coated onto flexible substrates, followed by electrogelation of PEDOT:PSS and the deposition of a PEDOT:LS eutectogel.

Analysis of the Mechanism for the Development of Allergic Skin Inflammation and the Application for Its Treatment: Keratinocytes in Atopic Dermatitis — Their Pathogenic Involvement

open access: yesJournal of Pharmacological Sciences, 2009
.: Atopic dermatitis frequently accompanies bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergic conjunctivitis, the pathogenesis of which has frequently focused on the immunological aspects; however, skin eruption in atopic dermatitis occurs mainly in the ...

Proderm technology: a water- based lipid delivery system for dermatitis that penetrates viable epidermis and has antibacterial effects. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
BackgroundA defective skin barrier and bacterial colonization are two important factors in maintenance and progression of atopic dermatitis and chronic allergic/irritant hand dermatitis.

Crossing the Barrier: STRA6 in Epidermal Differentiation [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Dermatology, 2014
In this issue, Skazik et al. demonstrate that the STRA6 retinol transporter protein regulates the proliferation and differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes. In human organotypic three-dimensional skin and skin reconstitution models, depletion of STRA6 induced hyperproliferation-associated differentiation, resulting in epidermal expansion.

Strain‐Programmable Luminescent Adhesive Patch With Tartrazine‐Mediated Optical Skin Clearing for Photochemical Tissue Bonding

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We propose a suture‐complementary approach that integrates optical skin clearing with a strain‐programmable luminescent adhesive patch. Hyaluronic acid promotes transdermal delivery of tartrazine to improve optical clearing and stabilizes its interaction with a photosensitizer. Optical clearing increases the penetration depth of visible light into skin,

On a dynamic reaction-diffusion mechanism: The spatial patterning of teeth primordia in the alligator [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
It is now well established both theoretically and, more recently, experimentally, that steady-state spatial chemical concentration patterns can be formed by a number of specific reaction–diffusion systems.
