Beach Gold and Heavy Mineral Concentrates on Tiwai Spit Gravel Strand Plain, Southland, New Zealand
The Holocene Tiwai Spit on Foveaux Strait is a 12 km by 2 km gravel‐dominated strand plain, ∼10 m above present sea level. Gravel clasts are dominated by well‐rounded quartz cobbles, pebbles and granules derived from Otago Schist 200 km to the north in evolving river drainage systems during late Cenozoic.

Abstract This study investigates the detrital record of the early orogenic evolution of the Sardinia‐Calabria system, preserved in Upper Cretaceous arenites exposed in eastern Sardinia. Sardinia and Corsica form a continental block that includes a segment of the Alpine orogen and of its former foreland basin.

In natural lower crustal rocks, we observe that plagioclase breakdown is often partial as evidenced by the presence of epidote‐group minerals and the absence of the remaining reaction products for example, kyanite and quartz.
