Artifact Mimicking Ictal Epileptiform Activity in EEG

Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology, 2019
Summary:Although the EEG is designed to record cerebral activity, it also frequently records activity from extracerebral sources, leading to artifact. Differentiating rhythmical artifact from true electrographic ictal activity remains a substantial challenge to even experienced electroencephalographers because the sources of artifact able to mimic ...

Hippocampal microdialysis during spontaneous intraoperative epileptiform activity

Acta Neurochirurgica, 2004
The actual mechanisms underlying human hippocampal epileptogenicity, a process ultimately mediated by neurochemical events, remains to be fully elucidated. We submit early insight data regarding microdialysis (MD) recovery of the neuroactive amino acids glutamate, aspartate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) from the intraoperative and intact ...

Dipole source localization of ictal epileptiform activity

NeuroReport, 1998
Dipole source localization of ictal epileptiform activity recorded by scalp EEG was performed in patients prior to surgical treatment. The dipole tracing method combined with the scalp-skull-brain head model was used to locate epileptogenic foci. A digital EEG system was used for data collection. The accuracy of dipole source localization was evaluated

Benzodiazepine antagonist flumazenil reduces hippocampal epileptiform activity

NeuroReport, 1995
We examined the effects of the benzodiazepine antagonist, flumazenil, on epileptiform discharges evoked in the hippocampal CA1 region in vitro. Application of 100 nM flumazenil did not affect normal synaptic responses; however, flumazenil did depress epileptiform discharges induced by 8 mM [K+]o.

Subcontinuous epileptiform activity after failed hippocampal radiosurgery

Epilepsia, 2011
SummaryPurpose:  Although gamma‐knife radiosurgery (GKS) has proved efficacious in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), its antiepileptic mechanism of action remains elusive. Human and experimental data suggest that subnecrotic radiation‐induced tissue changes might contribute to the antiepileptic effect of GKS.

Epileptiform Activity in Aphasia of Childhood:An Epiphenomenon?

Epilepsia, 1981
Summary: Isolated aphasia with associated EEG epileptiform activity is a recognized syndrome in children. The relationship of the EEG abnormality and the type and severity of the speech impairment has not been well described. This relationship was studied in two children with severe expressive and receptive aphasia with generalized spike‐wave ...

AMPA receptor activation reduces epileptiform activity in the rat neocortex

Brain Research, 2007
We have previously reported that topical application of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) to the rat neocortex prevents the effects of a subsequent application of N-methyl-d-aspartic acid (NMDA). Activation of NMDA receptors is involved in the pathogenesis of epileptic activity.

Metabortropic glutamate receptor activation decreases epileptiform activity in rat neocortex

Neuroscience Letters, 1994
Intracellular and extracellular recordings were obtained from layers II-III of slices of adult rat neocortex maintained in vitro. Excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) and epileptiform discharges (paroxysmal depolarizing shifts, PDSs) were evoked in the presence of bicuculline methiodide.

Propofol inhibits epileptiform activity in rat hippocampal slices

Epilepsy Research, 1996
Propofol (2,6 di-isopropylphenol) is an intravenous general anesthetic used widely in neuroanesthesia, as a sedative in intensive care units, and has successfully aborted refractory status epilepticus. We investigated the effects of propofol on epileptiform activity in rat hippocampal slices.

Mid-Line Epileptiform Activity in Adult Electroencephalograms

Clinical Electroencephalography, 1985
Nine cases among 1000 adults referred to our EEG Laboratory were found to have epileptiform discharges at the C-Z area, predominantly in the awake state. These were in the form of isolated spike and wave complexes in five cases (0.5%), and Mu-like rhythms in four (0.4%). In all cases, variable degrees of dementia were found, and the CT scan of the head
