Survey of preys captured and used by Polybia platycephala (Richards) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae, Epiponini) [PDF]
The social wasps are predators of several species of insects and the study of their preys can reveal their potential for programs of biological pest control. During the period of September 2000 to January 2002, were accomplished 70h of collections of the preys captured in twelve nests of Polybia platycephala Richards, placed in urban areas of Juiz de ...

Abstract Characters of adult morphology, male genitalia, and nest architecture are combined in a cladistic analysis of the neotropical paper wasp genus Synoeca. The single resulting cladogram supports the monophyly of genus. The species are related as follows: S. chalibea + (S. virginea + (S. septentrionalis + (S. surinama + S. cyanea))).

The division of labor is a central theme in the study of social insects. In bees and wasps, this activity is regulated by age polyethism. Important physiological and morphological changes have been widely studied in the polyethism of honeybee workers. In contrast, this is a relatively unexplored subject in social vespids.

In the Epiponini, queen number may vary from many to few during the colonial cycle. This cyclical oligogyny may be important for the maintenance of high genetic relatedness found in several taxa of epiponines. Even though queen reduction in accord with the colony cycle has either been demonstrated or inferred for many taxa, the factors responsible for ...

In neotropical swarm-founding wasps, caste differences can be arranged along a spectrum ranging from taxa in which queens and workers are externally similar, to others with fairly distinct caste attributes. In this study, queen-worker differences progressively increase during colony development in Protopolybia exigua and Chartergus globiventris.

Morphological caste differences and ovary conditions were analyzed in four colonies of Brachygastra augusti collected in different stages of the colony cycle. Differences between castes are distinct suggesting pre-imaginal determination. Many intermediates (non-inseminated ovary-developed females) were found.

A cladistic analysis of the swarm‐founding neotropical social wasp genus Charterginus is presented. A single cladogram resulted from the analysis of 31 morphological characters and six nest characters, with relationships among the species as follows: ((C. fulvus + C. xanthura) + (C. weyrauchi + (C. nevermanni + (C. carinatus + C. zavattarii)))).

In a previous study, we showed that the Polybia paulista wasp venom causes strong myonecrosis. This study was undertaken to characterize the myotoxic potency of mastoparan (Polybia-MPII) isolated from venom (0.25 microg/microl) and injected in the tibial anterior (TA) muscle (i.m.) of Balb/c mice.

Morphological and physiological variation between queens and workers of Protonectarina sylveirae (de Saussure) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Epiponini) [PDF]
Morphological and physiological variation between queens and workers of Protonectarina sylveirae (de Saussure) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Epiponini). The Neotropical swarm-founding wasps, Epiponini, range from the absence of morphological differentiation between castes to highly distinct castes.

Colonies and nests ofApoica pallens in the llanos region of Venezuela range from small foundress nests to large mature colonies. Nests are sited on small diameter, near-horizontal branches in a variety of shrub and tree species. During the day, adult wasps cluster on the face of the nest in an array that seems to be determined by orientation to gravity;
