Epistemic Virtues and Virtues With Epistemic Content
2020The investigation of epistemic virtues, such as curiosity, open-mindedness, intellectual courage and intellectual humility is a growing trend in epistemology. An underexplored question in this context is: what is the relationship between these virtues and other types of virtue, such as moral or prudential virtue?

This paper applies emerging research on epistemic virtues to business ethics. Inspired by recent work on epistemic virtues in philosophy, I develop a view in which epistemic virtues contribute to the acquisition of knowledge that is instrumentally valuable in the realisation of particular ends, business ends in particular.

The virtues of epistemic conservatism
Synthese, 2007Although several important methodologies implicitly assume the truth of epistemic conservatism, the view that holding a belief confers some measure of justification on the belief, recent criticisms have led some to conclude that epistemic conservatism is an implausible view. That conclusion is mistaken.

The Epistemic Value of Politeness as a Virtue
2021The chapter addresses politeness as a virtue and the underlying emotions which give rise to politeness on an intersubjective level. It explores the dynamic function of moral emotions which specifically contribute to politeness and delves into the issues of self-worth, self-love and a sense of power which all facilitate a stable emotional, dynamic ...

Synthese, 2019
Epistemic conservatism (EC) says that an agent is in some measure justified in maintaining a belief simply in virtue of the fact that the agent has that belief. In his new book On Evidence in Philosophy (2019), William Lycan argues that there is no special objection to EC that does not also impugn the other epistemic virtues.

Social Epistemology, 2007
At the intersection of social and virtue epistemology lies the important, yet so far entirely neglected, project of articulating the social dimensions of epistemic virtues. Perhaps the most obvious way in which epistemic virtues might be social is that they may be possessed by social collectives.

The Epistemic virtues of a teacher
2022The overlap between virtue epistemology and the philosophy of education has been dominated by discussions of the epistemic qualities of good learners, that is, the epistemic virtues that must be nurtured in students. Not much has been said about the epistemic qualities of good teachers expressed in virtue-theoretic terms.

Epistemic Virtues of Institutions
2020In everyday speech, we don’t only attribute virtues and vices to individuals, but also to institutions. In doing so, we implicitly assume that these collective entities are certain kinds of agents, the bearers of epistemic features – states, attitudes, beliefs, actions or like – for which they can be blamed or applauded.

Resistance as Epistemic Vice and as Epistemic Virtue
2013Abstract This chapter argues that testimonial injustice involves a lack of proportionality in the appraisals of epistemic qualities such as credibility. Being always comparative and contrastive, an epistemic appraisal concerns more than the particular subject(s) under consideration, given the comparison and contrast classes that support ...
