To the Editor: Water-impermeable transparent membranes of polypropylene or polymethyl methacrylate have been placed intralamellarly in patients having bullous keratopathy. 1-4 This procedure is of little help because, although the stroma in front of the membrane dehydrates and the epithelial edema disappears, the posterior stroma becomes even more ...

Plasticity in the airway epithelium
American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology, 1990Normal cell turnover as well as the response to injury require cell proliferation and differentiation. The airway epithelium maintains these processes throughout adult life. Controlled homeostatically, cell proliferation and differentiation usually restore, as an end point, the pseudostratified architecture of the normal mucociliary epithelium.

The Epithelium as a Target in Sepsis
Shock, 2016Organ dysfunction induced by sepsis has been consistently associated with worse outcome and death. Regardless of the organ compromised, epithelial dysfunction is present throughout the body, affecting those organs that contain epithelia like the skin, lungs, liver, gut, and kidneys.

Cilia in the ciliary epithelium
Albrecht von Graefes Archiv fr Klinische und Experimentelle Ophthalmologie, 1980Cilia in the pigmented and nonpigmented ciliary epithelial cells were studied by electron microscopy in the normal Rhesus monkey eye. In addition cilia formation was studied following paracentesis as well as injection of hemoglobin into the vitreous cavity.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses epithelia, which are essentially surface tissues of ectodermal origin. The epidermis covering the surface of the skin on the outside of the body is a typical epithelium. However, epithelia cover the surfaces of other tissues and are not necessarily confined to the outside of the animal; oral epithelium and the ...

Inflammasomes of the intestinal epithelium
Trends in Immunology, 2015While the functional importance of inflammasomes in blood-derived cell types is well established, it remains poorly understood how inflammasomes in nonhematopoietic cells contribute to mucosal immunity. Recent studies have revealed functional roles of inflammasomes - particularly NAIP/NLRC4, NLRP6, and noncanonical caspase-4 (caspase-11) - within ...

Defending the epithelium [PDF]
Two studies examine the microbe-fighting peptides that keep infection at bay in the urinary tract and the colon. In the urinary tract, such peptides are deployed with lightning speed, and in the colon a short-chain fatty acid induces the peptides and fends off dysentery caused by Shigella species ( pages 636 – 641

Optics of the Corneal Epithelium
Journal of Refractive Surgery, 1993ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The refractive effect of the corneal epithelium in relation to the cornea as a whole is relatively unknown, yet it may affect the efficacy of keratorefractive surgical procedures, most notably photorefractive keratectomy and epikeratoplasty. This article investigates the retractive effect of the epithelium on the cornea.

Cytoprotection of the gastric epithelium
World Journal of Surgery, 1981AbstractThe lining of the stomach of man is protected from its unique secretion, hydrochloric acid, by a variety of highly specialized characteristics. Foremost is its relative impermeability to hydrogen ions. The gastric surface epithelial cell which forms a continuous integument from the esophagus to the duodenum plays an important role in this ...
