The equatorial ionosphere

Contemporary Physics, 1973
Abstract At the magnetic equator the Earth's magnetic field is completely horizontal. This provides a constraint on the motion of the charged particles that comprise the ionosphere and produces dis...

Equion, an Equatorial Ionospheric Irregularity Experiment

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1977
Abstract : This paper describes a coordinated rocket and ground based study to investigate Equatorial Spread-F irregularities. Measurements by the Jicamarca backscatter radar, ionosondes, airglow instrumentation and of radio scintillations were correlated with high spatial resolution measurements of electron densities, particle fluxes and VLF-ELF ...

Electric field in the equatorial ionosphere

Planetary and Space Science, 1992
Abstract A model of the ionosphere as a global conductor is used to examine synchronous variations of electric fields and currents at high and low latitudes. The special form of a boundary value problem and a multigrid numerical method permit investigation of auroral field penetration to the equator.

Electric fields in the equatorial ionosphere

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1977
Abstract During a Commonwealth Collaborative Campaign between India and the U.K., artificial ion and neutral clouds were released at altitudes between 150 km and 160 km, using Petrel rockets launched from the TERLS range, Thumba, India. The experiments were conducted at local dusk, and the magnitude of the electric field components and neutral wind ...

Equatorial ionospheric drift and the electrojet

Planetary and Space Science, 1971
The results of the horizontal drift measurements at Thumba (0.6°S dip), a station situated at the magnetic equator, are studied in relation to the equatorial electrojet currents estimated from the variations of H component of the geomagnetic field. The daily, seasonal, and latitudinal variations of drift show a close similarity between the drift and ...

Modeling equatorial ionospheric electric fields

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1995
Abstract This paper gives a brief overview of the processes responsible for the equatorial electric field, and reviews relevant modeling work of these processes, with emphases on basic aspects and recent progress. Modeling studies have been able to explain most of the observed features of equatorial electric fields, although some uncertainties remain.

Frequency variation of equatorial ionospheric scintillations

Nature, 1976
THE fluctuations in the signal strength of v.h.f. and u.h.f. transmissions from satellites received at ground level contain valuable information about ionospheric irregularities. These fluctuations, usually called scintillations, depend on the frequency of transmission, characteristics of the irregularities and the angle of incidence.

The Equatorial Ionospheric Anomaly and the Equatorial Electrojet

Radio Science, 1969
It is shown that for the American zone the F‐region equatorial anomaly and the equatorial electrojet are highly correlated, whereas the anomaly and the Sq current system correlate poorly. A suggested explanation for the correlation is that the eastward electric field which drives the electrojet is also present in the F‐region and there causes upward ...

Electromagnetic resonances in the equatorial ionosphere

Space Science Reviews, 1982
The diagnostic and communication possibilities, based on resonant properties of ionospheric magnetoplasma near the Equator, are discussed for a wide spectral range of electromagnetic waves. The utilization of geometrical resonances of both natural and artificial origin and plasma eigenmodes are considered for a model of anisotropic heterogeneous ...

Study of the Equatorial Ionosphere.

1976
Abstract : Data from five years' daily records of the amplitude and Faraday rotation angle of the 136.47 MHz beacon on ATS-3 are analyzed to give the dependence of scintillation on sunspot number. The seasonal variation is then found. Finally, correlation among scintillation index (SI), total electron content (TEC) and magnetic activity (KP) is ...
