Reinterpreting the Bruun Rule in the Context of Equilibrium Shoreline Models

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2021
Long-term (>decades) coastal recession due to sea-level rise (SLR) has been estimated using the Bruun Rule for nearly six decades. Equilibrium-based shoreline models have been shown to skillfully predict short-term wave-driven shoreline change on time ...

Influence of a rocky platform in the profile morphology: Victoria Beach, Cadiz (Spain)

open access: yesCiencias Marinas, 2002
The equilibrium profile concept is a useful tool for the knowledge and management of the coastline. This concept is based on several assumptions that rarely are satisfied in nature.

Modelling of wave climate and sediment transport patterns at a tideless embayed beach, Pirita Beach, Estonia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Nearshore sand transport patterns along the tideless, embayed Pirita beach, Tallinn, Estonia, have been investigated utilizing high-resolution modelling of wave processes combined with bathymetric surveys and sediment textural analyses of the nearshore ...

An equilibrium profile model for tidal environments

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2002
During a full tidal cycle, the beach profile is exposed to continuously changing hydrodynamical conditions. Consequently, the profile evolves constantly to adapt to these changes.

Study of Equilibrium Beach Profiles

open access: yesCoastal Engineering 1976, 1976
The use of the dimensionless fall velocity for determining equilibrium foreshore slopes, -modeling of natural beaches in the laboratory, and for determining shoreline erosion rates is examined. Encouraging results are found for relating foreshore slope uniquely to the dimensionless fall velocity and possible model law is proposed.

Similarity of Equilibrium Beach Profiles

open access: yesCoastal Engineering 1972, 1972
In the design of mobile bed coastal models it is inherently assumed that prototype beach processes may be modelled using lightweight sediment. At the Queen's University Coastal Engineering Research Laboratory, a long range project is currently in progress to determine scaling laws and scale effect for mobile bed coastal models.

Thermodynamic solutions for equilibrium beach profiles [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2006
Solutions are developed for beach profiles using equilibrium principles of thermodynamics applied to simple representations of the nearshore fluid dynamics. Equilibrium beaches are posed as isothermal shorezone systems of constant volume that dissipate external work by incident waves into heat given up to the surroundings.

Medium-term dynamics of a middle Adriatic barred beach [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2017
In recent years, attention has been paid to beach protection by means of soft and hard defenses. Along the Italian coast of the Adriatic Sea, sandy beaches are the most common landscape feature and around 70 % of the Marche region's coast (central ...

3D Physical Modeling of an Artificial Beach Nourishment: Laboratory Procedures and Nourishment Performance

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2021
Beach nourishment represents a type of coastal defense intervention, keeping the beach as a natural coastal defense system. Altering the cross-shore profile geometry, due to the introduction of new sediments, induces a non-equilibrium situation regarding

Numerical Modelling of Beach Profile Evolution with and without an Artificial Reef

open access: yesWater, 2023
With the recent development from grey infrastructures to green infrastructures, artificial reefs become more popular in coastal protection projects. To investigate the responses of beach profile evolution to the presence of an artificial reef, a non ...
