Mechanical Equilibrium and Equilibrium Systems
2003In the paper, it is shown that the principle of virtual work considered an axiom of mechanics by Lagrange (1788) and Farkas (1906) can be embedded in a general equilibrium system, the quasi-variational inequalities introduced by Bensoussan and Lions in 1973, assuming force fields and holonomic-scleronomic constraints.

Non-Hamiltonian equilibrium statistical mechanics
Physical Review E, 2003In this paper the equilibrium statistical mechanics of non-Hamiltonian systems is formulated introducing an algebraic bracket. The latter defines non-Hamiltonian equations of motion in classical phase space according to the approach introduced in Phys. Rev. E 64, 056125 (2001).

Stability of a Mechanical Equilibrium
1977This chapter is devoted to stability questions concerning mechanical equilibria, or in other words to stability of critical points for differential equations having the Lagrangian or Hamiltonian form, with or without friction forces. The central theorem in this context was stated by J.L.

Equilibrium Selling Mechanisms [PDF]
We consider the equilibrium choice of selling mechanisms by competing firms. For a model where a number of sellers choose sequentially between any two selling mechanisms, there is a unique (subgame perfect) equilibrium under fairly natural assumptions about the monotonicity and differences of the two mechanisms.

Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics
2002In this section we review the entropy principle, which may serve as a basis for deriving various assemble density functions. The principle has a long history and has been the topic of controversy over many years. Although the starting point is rather simple, it lasted a few decades before the correct mathematical formulation was obtained and that the ...

Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics
2001In Chapter 2, we established the equations governing the microscopic dynamics of the lattice gas. This microscopic dynamics provides the basics of the procedure for constructing automata simulating the behavior of fluid systems (see Chapter 10). However, in order to use LGAs as a method for the analysis of physical phenomena, we must go to a level of ...

Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics
2019AbstractChapter 4 reviews the basic notions of equilibrium statistical mechanics and begins with its fundamental postulate and outlines the structure of the theory using the most important of the various statistical ensembles, the microcanonical, the canonical, and the grand canonical ensemble and their corresponding thermodynamic potential, the ...
