Mechanics‐based model for cold joints in reinforced concrete members
Abstract This study introduces a mechanics‐based numerical model to characterize the behavior of cold joints in reinforced concrete members subjected to monotonic loading. The model incorporates mechanisms such as interface slip and opening, aggregate interlock, clamping force, and dowel action of the reinforcing bars crossing the interface.

Geometry of developing and equilibrium scour holes at bridge piers in gravel
Experimental results on scour at circular and square cylinders in uniform gravel under the clear-water scour condition are presented. Nonintrusive, high-resolution topographic measurements of developing and equilibrium scour holes were performed during running experiments with an experimental installation using a laser distance sensor (LDS) and ...

Urban oases relax desiccation risk for an arid‐adapted lizard
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Urbanization from expanding human development has radically altered the structure, ecology and microclimate of landscapes worldwide. These dramatic environmental alterations subject organisms to novel ecological conditions and may select for distinct ecophysiological ...

Viscosity effects on local scour around vertical structures in clear-water conditions
Local scour represents the erosion process that occurs at the base of hydraulic structures overlying sediment beds. Horseshoe vortices forming at the bed-structure junction are the main responsible for sediment removal and dictate erosion rates as well ...

Effect of Transversal Bed Slope on the Equilibrium Scour Depth at Bridge Piers
This study focused on the effect of the transversal bed slope on scouring at bridge piers. Twenty-four experiments were conducted, half of them being on a horizontal bed and the other half on inclined beds. Three inclination angles, three flow intensities, and three pier diameters were combined within the degrees of freedom of the available ...

Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Environmental heterogeneity generates taxonomic and functional beta diversity, but a key question regards whether heterogeneity can maintain functional diversity when global change causes range shifts, potentially causing biotic homogenization by favouring species ...

Local scour around complex pier groups and combined piles at semi-integral bridge
This research presents an experimental study on the scouring mechanism at semi-integral bridge piers. Based on laboratory experiments, this study focuses on the relationship between scour depth in complex pier groups and combined piles bridge and various

Scour process caused by multiple subvertical non-crossing jets
The scour process induced by plunging jets is an important topic for hydraulic engineers. In recent decades, several researchers have developed new strategies and methodologies to control the scour morphology, including different jet arrangements and ...

Glacially overdeepened valleys in the northern Alpine Foreland preserve Middle to Late Pleistocene sedimentary sequences that may serve as valuable archives for reconstructing past environmental changes in response to shifts in climate. This study presents a multidisciplinary analysis of two sediment cores from the overdeepened Wehntal Valley at ...
