A numerical approach for determining equilibrium scour depth around a mono-pile due to steady currents

Applied Ocean Research, 2016
Abstract In this work, we propose a first approximation approach to obtain the equilibrium scour depth around a mono-pile using a numerical scour model. This is achieved by modelling the turbulent flow around the cylindrical pile to obtain the bed parameters driving the sediment motion.

Effect of Viscosity on the Equilibrium Scour Depth at Single Cylindrical Piers

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2016
Most studies on scouring seem to have overlooked the effect of viscosity, the assumption being that the flow is free of viscous effects inside the scour hole because of the presence of highly turbulent flow structures such as down-flow, horseshoe vortex, and wake vortices irrespective of the approach flow regime. The present work reports the results of

Equilibrium scour depth at offshore monopile foundation in combined waves and current

Science China Technological Sciences, 2014
Unlike the pier scour in bridge waterways, the local scour at offshore monopile foundations should take into account the effect of wave-current combination. Under the condition of wave-current coexistence, the water-soil interfacial scouring is usually coupled with the pore-pressure dynamics inside of the seabed.

A new mathematical model to calculate the equilibrium scour depth around a pier

Acta Geophysica, 2019
This paper sheds light on the formulation of a new equilibrium local scour depth equation around a pier. The total bed materials removed from the scour hole due to the force exerted by the flowing fluid after colliding with the pier in the flow field are estimated.

Effect of pier shape and pier alignment on the equilibrium scour depth at single piers

International Journal of Sediment Research, 2016
Abstract The equilibrium scour depth at uniform single bridge piers depends on a large number of variables, including the pier horizontal cross-section shape and its alignment angle towards the flow direction. The influence of these variables has been studied by only a few researchers, mostly, on the basis of tests that were far from approaching ...

Predicting Equilibrium Scour Depth at Bridge Piers Using Evolutionary Radial Basis Function Neural Network

Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, 2015
AbstractScouring of bridge piers is a major cause of bridge failure worldwide. Thus, designing safe depths for new bridge foundations and assessing/monitoring the safety of existing bridge foundations are critical to reducing the risk of bridge collapse and the subsequent potential losses in terms of life and property. This paper develops and tests the
