Thoroughbred Racehorses in Hong Kong Require Vitamin D Supplementation to Mitigate the Risk of Low Vitamin D Status

open access: yesAnimals, 2023
There is a paucity of data relating to the vitamin D status of racehorses. We hypothesised that the management of racehorses in Hong Kong (HK) predisposes to low vitamin D status unless they receive dietary supplementation.

The “costly son” hypothesis: Sons exacerbate obstetrical dilemmas in humans and other mammals

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Human childbirth has often been considered uniquely difficult among mammals, yet recent evidence suggests that obstructed labor and fetopelvic disproportion are widespread across placental mammals. Here, we propose the “costly son” hypothesis: because male offspring are typically larger at birth, they impose greater obstetric risk on mothers ...

The Behavioral Cost of Care: Changes in Maintenance Behavior during Equine-Assisted Interventions

open access: yesAnimals
This study examined human–animal symbiosis in an animal-assisted intervention through observations of animal maintenance behaviors. The rise of psychotherapy, learning, and recreation incorporating animals warrants exploration of the welfare of the ...

Follicle Stimulating Hormone in Cattle Breeding: Fundamentals, Innovations, and Scope

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
FSH is crucial in cattle reproduction, with exogenous administration enhancing breeding and embryo production. Recombinant FSH offers advantages over pituitary‐extracted variants, including fewer injections, reduced stress, and safer production. These innovations improve breeding efficiency, optimize reproductive outcomes, and contribute to sustainable

Why Should Human-Animal Interactions Be Included in Research of Working Equids’ Welfare?

open access: yesAnimals, 2019
The livelihood of working horses’ owners and their families is intimately linked to the welfare of their equids. A proper understanding of human-animal interactions, as well as the main factors that modulate them, is essential for establishing ...

Single-cell transcriptomics delineates the immune cell landscape in equine lower airways and reveals upregulation of FKBP5 in horses with asthma

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Equine asthma (EA) is a heterogenous, complex disease, with a significant negative impact on horse welfare and performance. EA and human asthma share fundamental similarities, making EA a useful model for studying the disease.

Duck Orbivirus and Egg Production: A Newly Identified Duck Orbivirus Is the Etiological Agent of Egg Production Decline in Chinese Breeder Ducks

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Field samples from breeder duck farms with egg‐production decline were subjected to viral detection, genome sequencing, and virus isolation. Experimental infection demonstrated that duck orbivirus (DORV) causes a significant and persistent reduction in egg production in breeder ducks.

Student and staff experiences of interactive digital models when learning animal anatomy

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, EarlyView.
Abstract Compared to human medical sciences, digital models of animals are rare, often behind subscription services and are comparatively lacking in interactivity and accessibility features. This study explores how digital models are currently being used to teach animal anatomy, providing the data required to construct the best anatomical models ...

Emotional responses of veterinary students to first encounters with animal body donors

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, EarlyView.
Abstract Students' first encounters with animal body donors in higher education are a formative and also potentially stressful experience. The complex emotions elicited by body donor use in learning and their effects on professional development have been documented in medical students, but are far less explored in veterinary medical counterparts.

Guidelines for designing and implementing game‐based learning in comparative anatomy education

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, EarlyView.
Abstract Game‐based learning (GBL) is increasingly used in health professions anatomy education to promote engagement, knowledge acquisition, collaboration, and application of knowledge. However, its application to comparative veterinary anatomy remains fragmented, with limited guidance on how games can be systematically designed around the specific ...
