Agriculture students’ weed collections: Choices of plants and errors in identification

Abstract Requiring students to create weed collections is a common technique for teaching weed identification. Data compiled over 18 years from students’ weed collections in a college‐level course included over 350 species of plants. Almost half of the specimens belonged to the Asteraceae or Poaceae.

Summary We describe and illustrate the evergreen and epiphytic fern Lepisorus boninensis (H.Christ) Ching, endemic to the Bonin Islands in Japan. This species can be recognised by the dimorphic leaves, the ovate and clathrate scales on the rhizome, and the irregularly‐shaped paraphyses growing between sporangia of the sori.
