Abstract An intensified global programme to eradicate smallpox within 10 years was initiated by the World Health Organization in January 1967. This goal will virtually be achieved. Whereas an estimated 10-15 million cases had occurred in 44 countries in 1967, only one small focus and two known active cases still remained in December ...

On eradication of schistosomiasis
Theoretical Population Biology, 1976Abstract Eradication of schistosomiasis from an isolated community is discussed. A mathematical model is used to derive conditions under which eradication results from the administration of a single dose of drugs to the human population. It is shown that this mode of eradication is facilitated by a control program that is directed at such changes of ...

The virulence of rubella virus for the fetus was fully defined between 1963 and 1965 when an epidemic of rubella occurred in Europe and the US, followed by a wave of damaged babies. Attenuated live virus vaccines were developed in our and other laboratories and their use has already considerably changed the epidemiology of rubella.

The key events in the eradication of smallpox worldwide are related. Smallpox virus was spread by droplets only from the appearance of the rash until scabs form 4 weeks later. It only infected humans making it a potential disease for eradication. It had been endemic in populous areas largely China and India in ancient times appearing in Europe in ...

Since the poliomyelitis eradication program began in 1988, the number of poliovirus infected continents and countries have decreased from five to two and from greater than 100 to 53, respectively. A nearly 90% reduction in the incidence of polio has been achieved with a corresponding decrease in virus genomic heterogeneity.

Cholesteatoma is, among the lesions appearing in chronic otitis media, the one creating most problems. We have selected 8 clinical situations, the most significant in our practice. After a short description of each, we expose our attitudes, past and present, in regard to each. Whether to use open or close techniques seems to be today's dilemma.
