Nonlinearities in Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers

Optical Amplifiers and their Applications, 1999
In recent years, cross talk induced by the nonlinear properties of optical fibers has been recognized as an important limiting factor in the performance of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) systems.

A Distributed Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier

Optical Fiber Communication, 1990
To date erbium amplifiers have been based on fiber doped with 10 to 1000 ppm erbium oxide, providing several tens of dB gain in lengths of 100 m or less.[1–4] However, communications systems which use such high gain, "lumped" amplifiers subject the signal to large excursions in amplitude, which can cause significant interchannel interference in a ...

Erbium-doped Photonic Crystal Fiber

2009
Abstract : This report results from a contract tasking Crystal Fibre A/S as follows: TASK 1: Crystal Fibre will conduct research and development of large mode area, dual clad Er-doped photonic crystal fiber with the design and specifications to be provided by the HQ USAFA/DFP. The intention is to do one fiber type in both a passive and active (Er-doped)

L-band erbium-doped fiber amplifiers

Optical Fiber Communication Conference. Technical Digest Postconference Edition. Trends in Optics and Photonics Vol.37 (IEEE Cat. No. 00CH37079), 2002
WDM systems are being planned that will use the long-wavelength (L-band) or extended (E-Band) band of the erbium-doped fiber in coordination with the conventional band (C-band). Appending the L-band will ultimately double the available transmission bandwidth and reduce impairments due to nonlinearities in the fiber plant.
