Using art history to explore society's changing connections with agriculture

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Food insecurity is a looming challenge that especially affects those least fortunate. Consumer food choices have a substantial impact on the sustainability of current food systems. Here, we use art as a lens through which to consider our contemporary and historical relationship to one of the world's most crucial crops, the potato, in the context of the

Eros e Thanatos

open access: yes, 2015

Sliding Mode Control in Aerospace Applications: A Survey

open access: yesInternational Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sliding mode control (SMC) enjoys robustness to matched and unmatched (in the case of minimum phase input‐output dynamics) bounded perturbations, and finite time convergence. Second‐order and higher‐order sliding mode control systems (2‐SMC/HOSMC) retain all the advantages of sliding mode control, but in addition can be applied to systems of ...

From Flybys to Sample Return: A Review of Space Probes and Robotic Sampling Technologies for Small Bodies

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As a crucial puzzle piece of deep space exploration, exploring small bodies can provide significant scientific insights and valuable mineral resources. Unlike missions to the Moon and Mars, small‐body missions pose distinct technical challenges, including communication delays, weak gravity, and uncertain environments. This paper reviews a full

EROS: a galactic microlensing odyssey

open access: yes, 2003
The EROS microlensing survey has monitored nearly 100 million stars for seven years, to search for halo brown dwarfs and compact objects in the Galactic disk.

Historical remote sensing highlights long‐term persistence of Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) colonies

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Remote sensing can reveal population dynamics of Antarctic penguin colonies. In this study, we analyze emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) guano stains in remote sensing imagery and discover colony presence predating known records for 18 colonies across Antarctica.

Stoic Eros

open access: yes
The Stoics distinguish two forms of eros. In vicious agents eros is indeed a passion and thus born out of a defective rational judgment about what is needed for happiness. But there is also a positive form of erotic love, practiced by the Sage on the basis of knowledge, which aims to reproduce his virtuous condition in others.

From Plot to Block: Participatory Land Use for Climate‐Resilient Detached Housing in Finland

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates how urban planning in Finland is adapting to climate change, focusing on the practical challenges planners face in single‐family housing areas. It draws on participatory workshops with municipal planners in Pori and Joensuu, where three planning tools—green factor metrics, impermeable surface limits, and the 3–30‐300 ...

Analytical perturbation method for frozen orbits around the asteroid 433 Eros

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper a method for obtaining initial condition for frozen orbits around fast rotating, highly irregular bodies is presented. Such method is based on a general perturbative theory of motion, for inhomogeneous gravitational fields.

Vector-raster server-side analysis: a PostGIS benchmark

open access: yes, 2013
Report generation from coverages around points of interest (POIs) or in areas of interest (AOIs) is a common need in thematic research projects. The extracted information adds value to the POIs or AOIs dataset by enriching its information content.
