Comparison between clinical evaluations and laboratory findings and the impact of biofilm on antimicrobial susceptibility in vitro in canine otitis externa

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 34, Issue 6, Page 586-596, December 2023., 2023
Background – In clinical practice, the diagnosis of otitis externa (OE) normally is based on otoscopic examination and cytological findings, followed by empirical treatment with topic drugs. Biofilm‐producing bacteria are frequently present in OE, even if its presence is often underdiagnosed. Hypothesis/Objectives – The primary aim of this study was to

In search of a substitution model for coca in Colombia: Buffalo, cocoa, and coffee in Peasant Reserve Zones

open access: yesLatin American Policy, Volume 14, Issue 3, Page 388-407, September 2023., 2023
Abstract For years Colombia has been the world's largest coca producer. Its public management of crops for illicit use has swung between eradication, substitution, and, recently legalization. Forced eradication has been shown to be ineffective, and legalization is an incipient option, so the Peace Agreement puts forward substitution as the path to ...

Long transient response of vegetation dynamics after four millennia of anthropogenic impacts in an island ecosystem

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 28, Issue 21, Page 6318-6332, November 2022., 2022
In the Mediterranean region, island ecosystem dynamics have been influenced by millennia of anthropogenic impacts. Here, we analysed the spatio‐temporal dynamics of vegetation in sa Dragonera, where herbivory by goats, over‐logging and rat occurrence ended in the last decades.

Applying fault tree analysis to biological invasions identifies optimal targets for effective biosecurity

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 10, Page 2553-2566, October 2022., 2022
While prevention has been long recognised as the most cost‐effective action against biological invasions, here we were able to quantify the reduction in invasion risk under a range of management scenarios. Optimising all management elements included in the FT reduced the overall probability of invasion by three orders of magnitude.

Consensus and controversy in the discipline of invasion science

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 5, October 2022., 2022
Abstract Approaches, values, and perceptions in invasion science are highly dynamic, and like in other disciplines, views among different people can diverge. This has led to debate in the field specifically surrounding the core themes of values, management, impacts, and terminology.

A field experiment characterizing variable detection rates during plant surveys

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 3, June 2022., 2022
Abstract Surveys aimed at finding threatened and invasive species can be challenging due to individual rarity and low and variable individual detection rates. Detection rate in plant surveys typically varies due to differences among observers, among the individual plants being surveyed (targets), and across background environments.

Evaluating unintended consequences of intentional species introductions and eradications for improved conservation management

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 1, February 2022., 2022
Abstract Increasingly intensive strategies to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem function are being deployed in response to global anthropogenic threats, including intentionally introducing and eradicating species via assisted migration, rewilding, biological control, invasive species eradications, and gene drives. These actions are highly contentious

The use of social attraction techniques to restore seabird colonies on Desecheo Island, Puerto Rico

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 2, Issue 2, April–June 2021., 2021
Bridled terns decoys with mirror as part of the social attraction techniques for seabirds implemented on Desecheo Island, Puerto Rico Abstract Desecheo Island (117 ha) was historically an important seabird island in the Caribbean with 15 species recorded, of which seven are known to breed, including major populations of brown boobies and red‐footed ...
