Fast magnitude determination using a single seismological station record implementing machine learning techniques

open access: yesGeodesy and Geodynamics, 2018
In this work a Support Vector Machine Regression (SVMR) algorithm is used to calculate local magnitude (Ml) using only five seconds of signal after the P wave onset of one three component seismic station.

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

Extremes of Random-Coding Error Exponents

open access: yes2011 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory, St. Petersburg, Russia, 2011
We show that Gallager's random coding error exponent of an arbitrary binary-input memoryless symmetric channel is upper-bounded by that of the binary erasure channel and lower-bounded by that of the binary-symmetric channel of the same capacity. We apply the result to find the extremes of the channel dispersion for the aforementioned class of channels.

Generating Cell Surface Nucleated Hydrogels with an Artificial Membrane‐Binding Transglutaminase

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cell‐based therapies require advanced strategies to enhance cell delivery and bioactivity. Cell membrane engineering offers an avenue to impart new functions to delivered cells to boost their viability and function. Here, an artificial membrane‐binding transglutaminase is generated and biophysically characterized.

Solar Heating Enhanced Selective Recovery of Metal Ions Through Flowing Electrodes Enabled by Hybrid Carbon Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A new electrochemical system based on a microporous hybrid of carbon nanoplatelets and nanotubes to selectively capture Ni2+ from wastewater is constructed. The system temperature rises rapidly when irradiated with sunlight, which enhances the Ni2+ removal rate by 250% and the selectivity by 53%, and the energy consumption is also reduced by 51 ...

Regularized Yield Surfaces for Crystal Plasticity of Metals

open access: yesCrystals, 2020
The rate-independent Schmid assumption for a metal crystal results in a yield surface that is faceted with sharp corners. Regularized yield surfaces round off the corners and can be convenient in computational implementations.

Exciton Binding Energy Modulation in 2D Perovskites: A Phenomenological Keldysh Framework

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The intrinsic screening effects are successfully decoupled from structural distortion by rigorously designing a series of 2D perovskites. This enabled us to demonstrate how the dielectric environment modulates the quasiparticle bandgap and exciton binding energy.

A note on the analysis of Herrmann–May lattices for small exponent RSA

open access: yesScientific Reports
At PKC 2010, Herrmann and May introduced a lattice-based method using unravelled linearization to achieve the theoretical bound $$d < N^{1- \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}}$$ d < N 1 - 1 2 for small RSA exponents.
