A step toward density benchmarking—The energy-relevant “mean field error”
Since the development of generalized gradient approximations in the 1990s, approximations based on density functional theory have dominated electronic structure theory calculations.

Prospecting the protein design landscape
This review outlines the current state of various protein design approaches. We discuss the current possibilities enabled by recently released tools, highlight future avenues to pursue in protein design, and underscore the crucial role of key databases and resources for successful protein design workflows.

Penetration of a glass-faced transparent elastomeric resin by a lead-antimony-cored bullet [PDF]
The penetration of the lead antimony-cored 7.62 mm × 51 mm bullet into a glass- faced polyurethane elastomeric polymer resin has been studied. The resulting craters in the resin contained elongated bullet core material that had a significant amount of ...

Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?

In the rapid chloride migration (RCM) test, the chloride concentration at the chromogenic boundary often differs from the standard value of 0.07 mol/L, leading to an overestimated migration coefficient, especially when the penetration depth is shallow ...

Development of the saddle loop sensors on the J-TEXT tokamak
To measure the amplitude and phase of the non-axisymmetric radial magnetic field generated by the locked mode, 12 saddle loop sensors are newly developed on the J-TEXT Tokamak.

Loss of IGF‐1R impairs DNA‐PKcs recruitment to chromatin leading to defective end‐joining
IGF‐1R promotes radioresistance by facilitating DNA‐PKcs recruitment to chromatin, enabling non‐homologous end‐joining (NHEJ) repair of double‐strand breaks. Inhibition or loss of IGF‐1R disrupts this recruitment to damage sites, driving compensatory reliance on microhomology‐mediated end‐joining (MMEJ) repair.

Prediction of TBM penetration rate for different surrounding rocks and cutter head diameters
The penetration rate (PR) of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is often used to evaluate tunneling performance and predict construction period costs. However, most penetration rate (PR) prediction models are based on a single specific project, which leads to

Rice cvs with better hardpan penetration would be expected to be more drought resistant in the rainfed lowlands. Although laboratory methods to facilitate the identification or breeding of cvs with good root-penetration ability have been described, there

We identify USP29 as the only DUB mirroring CA9 expression, a marker of hypoxia and HIF pathway activation associated with PCA aggressiveness. USP29 stabilizes HIF‐1α and HIF‐2α via a noncanonical mechanism that is independent of PHD/pVHL activity yet relies on proteasomal regulation, establishing USP29 as a previously unrecognized regulator of hypoxic
