Bifactor Models for Predicting Criteria by General and Specific Factors: Problems of Nonidentifiability and Alternative Solutions

open access: yesJournal of Intelligence, 2018
The bifactor model is a widely applied model to analyze general and specific abilities. Extensions of bifactor models additionally include criterion variables.

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Site-specific height-diameter and stem volume equations for Lebombo-ironwood

open access: yesAnnals of Forest Research, 2017
Height–diameter (H–D) and stem volume equations are indispensable tools for forest management and have a wide use in forestry, however they are lacking for Lebombo-ironwood.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Climate model trend errors are evident in seasonal forecasts at short leads

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
Climate models exhibit errors in their simulation of historical trends of variables including sea surface temperature, winds, and precipitation, with important implications for regional and global climate projections.

Improving dynamical climate predictions with machine learning: insights from a twin experiment framework [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics
Systematic errors in dynamical climate models remain a significant challenge to accurate climate predictions, particularly when modeling the nonlinear coupling between the atmosphere and ocean.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...
