International Journal of Dermatology, 2010AbstractHyperpigmented fixed eruption is a phenomenon usually related with drug antigens, and known as fixed drug eruption. A woman had a skin condition with clinical and histopathologic indications of fixed drug eruption. The disease first appeared when she went to a swimming pool and left with hyperpigmented macules.

DURING the past twelve years I have had the opportunity to observe persons with an acute form of dermatitis which occurs within a short time after bathing in the ocean. This eruption is characterized by erythematous wheals, which appear within a few hours after exposure and persist for several days, involuting spontaneously.

Physicians are aware of the distinctive malar flush or "butterfly" eruption which characterizes systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (Fig 1). The other butterfly eruptions illustrated in this section are associated with unrelated dermatologic conditions of no great medical concern.

Several reports of seabather's eruption have appeared since Sams' 1 original description of this entity, but the etiology has not been definitely determined. Marine schistosome organisms have been reported to be the etiological agents. * A direct causal relationship has not been established beyond a doubt by recovery of the organisms coincidentally ...
