Dynamics of Spirochetemia and Early PCR Detection of Borrelia miyamotoi

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2018
We investigated whether Borrelia miyamotoi disease can be detected in its early stage by using PCR for borrelial 16S rRNA, which molecule (DNA or RNA) is the best choice for this test, and whether spirochetes are present in blood during the acute phase ...

Does clinical exposure to different skin tones during training improve diagnostic ability?

open access: yesMedical Education, Volume 60, Issue 4, Page 410-417, April 2026.

If not addressed, poorer differential diagnostic ability in certain skin tones could entrench existing racial ...

Case Report: Familial Cold Autoinflammatory Syndrome With Double Variant in NLRP12 and SETD1A

open access: yesCase Reports in Medicine, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The inflammasome is a protein complex involved in the activation of inflammatory responses through the production of proinflammatory cytokines and pyroptosis. NLRP12 is a NOD‐like receptor that regulates inflammation and inflammasome signaling. Mutations in the NLRP12 gene can lead to familial cold autoinflammatory syndrome type 2 (FCAS2), an autosomal

A Case of Jarisch–Herxheimer Reaction After Ceftriaxone Initiation for Lyme Carditis in Postpartum Female

open access: yesCase Reports in Infectious Diseases, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Lyme carditis is a complication occurring in 1%–5% of Lyme disease infections. It can lead to life‐threatening cardiac conduction abnormalities. Treatment with antibiotics may trigger the Jarisch–Herxheimer reaction (JHR), an acute inflammatory response to spirochetal lysis. Here, we present a 32‐year‐old postpartum female with complete heart block and

Cutaneous Pseudoepitheliomatous Hyperplasia Secondary to Embedded Canine Pet Hair Mimicking Squamous Cell Carcinoma

open access: yesCase Reports in Dermatological Medicine, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Although benign, cutaneous pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PEH) is oftentimes difficult to distinguish from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). PEH arises from underlying dermal neoplasia, infection, or inflammation. This case report presents the case of a patient with PEH that occurred as a reactive inflammatory response to a foreign body canine hair ...
