Fluorescence optical imaging for treatment monitoring in patients with early and active rheumatoid arthritis in a 1-year follow-up period [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
BACKGROUND: Fluorescence optical imaging (FOI) enables visualization of inflammation in the hands in rheumatic joint diseases with currently a lack of long-term follow-up studies.

Extracorporeal Catalytic Hemoperfusion Therapy for Refractory Septic Shock Using Ceria Nanoparticle‐Embedded Porous Microbeads

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces an extracorporeal hemoperfusion system incorporating porous microbeads embedded with autocatalytic ceria nanoparticles (CeNPs) for targeted reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging in septic shock. The blood‐compatible hemoperfusion cartridge demonstrated significant improvements in survival, hemodynamic stability, and organ ...

Platelet-Induced Clumping of Plasmodium falciparum–Infected Erythrocytes from Malawian Patients with Cerebral Malaria—Possible Modulation In Vivo by Thrombocytopenia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Platelets may play a role in the pathogenesis of human cerebral malaria (CM), and they have been shown to induce clumping of Plasmodium falciparum–parasitized red blood cells (PRBCs) in vitro.

Thymoquinone effects on DMH-induced erythrocyte oxidative stress and haematological alterations during colon cancer promotion in rats

open access: yesJournal of Functional Foods, 2013
The effect of thymoquinone (TQ), the abundant component of black cumin seed (Nigella sativa) oil extract, was evaluated on 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced erythrocyte oxidative stress and haematological perturbations during colon cancer promotion in ...

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and albumin as markers of inflammation are associated with measures of sarcopenia: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesBMC Geriatrics, 2019
Background Chronic inflammation is considered to affect physical performance, muscle strength and muscle mass, i.e. measures of sarcopenia. We need to identify a marker of inflammation that is univocally associated with measures of sarcopenia.

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.
