Tracking the impact of bottom trawling on benthic habitat status

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Bottom trawling is the most widespread physical disturbance to marine benthic habitats, yet broadscale assessments of its impact remain limited. We developed a quantitative framework to evaluate trawling effects on benthic habitats at broad spatial scales based on the sentinels of seabed (SoS) indicator.

Assessing contributions of deterministic versus stochastic processes to local species assembly: A field experiment with annual plant‐dominated communities in gypsum systems

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 3, March 2026.
In this study, we experimentally show that stochasticity can play prominent roles in driving local species assembly in annual plant‐dominated communities of semiarid gypsum ecosystems. Drylands are traditionally viewed as restrictive environments that impose strong deterministic filtering effects, but neutral events can also contribute decisively to ...

Grazing and climate interact to regulate greening trends in Mediterranean grasslands

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Our results show that traditional grazing systems can maintain grassland stability without causing degradation, but they can also increase the ecosystem's vulnerability to climate change. We provide clear evidence that GPS‐based livestock monitoring is a powerful and scalable tool for sustainable rangeland management.

Efecto agudo de dos intensidades de tango (baja y moderada) sobre el estado de ánimo de adultos mayores/The acute effect of two intensities of tango (low and moderate) on mood states and perceived exertion in older adults

Increasingly conservative N cycling in a wet tropical forest: Litter and stream N concentrations decline over 29 years despite surges from hurricanes

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 9, Page 2476-2496, September 2025.
Conceptual model integrating short‐ and long‐term responses of N in litterfall and stream water in a wet tropical forest subject to hurricanes. Despite N surges following hurricanes, N cycling becomes more conservative in the absence of frequent hurricanes.

Andean grassland stability across spatial scales increases with camelid grazing intensity despite biotic homogenization

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 4, Page 931-942, April 2025.
Our results emphasize the necessity of considering the complex influences of grazing intensity on diversity and stability at different spatial scales for the effective management of Andean grasslands. Abstract Intensive land use and changing environmental conditions are reshaping the biodiversity, functioning and stability of local Andean grassland ...

La sombra alargada del patrón: Gamonalismo y hábitos hacendatarios en Chimborazo tras la reforma agraria

open access: yesThe Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology, Volume 29, Issue 4, Page 352-363, December 2024.
Abstract This paper explores selective aspects of the historical processes of organization of the kichwa peasantry in the Andes of Ecuador. Based on the analysis of two representative cases of confrontation between peasants and landowners over access to land in the province of Chimborazo, it discusses the relevance of the concept of “gamonalismo” as ...
