Reproductive and hormonal factors and risk of renal cell carcinoma among women in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition

open access: yesCancer Medicine, Volume 12, Issue 14, Page 15588-15600, July 2023., 2023
Reproductive and hormonal factors are known to be associated with the risk of several cancers in women, but their role in kidney cancer is unclear. Despite the higher incidence of kidney cancer in men, its aetiology in women deserves further exploration.

Conservation threats and future prospects for the freshwater fishes of Ecuador: A hotspot of Neotropical fish diversity

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 99, Issue 4, Page 1158-1189, October 2021., 2021
ABSTRACT Freshwater fish communities in Ecuador exhibit some of the highest levels of diversity and endemism in the Neotropics. Unfortunately, aquatic ecosystems in the country are under serious threat and conditions are deteriorating. In 2018–19, the government of Ecuador sponsored a series of workshops to examine the conservation status of Ecuador's ...

Lifetime alcohol intake, drinking patterns over time and risk of stomach cancer: A pooled analysis of data from two prospective cohort studies

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, Volume 148, Issue 11, Page 2759-2773, 1 June 2021., 2021
Abstract Alcohol consumption is causally linked to several cancers but the evidence for stomach cancer is inconclusive. In our study, the association between long‐term alcohol intake and risk of stomach cancer and its subtypes was evaluated. We performed a pooled analysis of data collected at baseline from 491 714 participants in the European ...

Reduction in the neuronal surface of post and presynaptic GABAB receptors in the hippocampus in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 30, Issue 3, Page 554-575, May 2020., 2020
Abstract The hippocampus plays key roles in learning and memory and is a main target of Alzheimer's disease (AD), which causes progressive memory impairments. Despite numerous investigations about the processes required for the normal hippocampal functions, the neurotransmitter receptors involved in the synaptic deficits by which AD disables the ...

Drivers of plant phenolic concentration across global drylands

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study advances the understanding of how biotic and abiotic stressors shape plant defence strategies in global drylands. The findings shed novel insights about how plant secondary metabolites and their associated functions shift in response to changes in climate and grazing pressure, two key global change drivers with significant implications for ...

Plant Trait Matching Occurs in Facilitative Interactions Across Global Drylands

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 34, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Plant functional traits can influence interaction outcomes between nurse and target plants through a “functional trait match”, which occurs when the traits of nurse plants ameliorate their environment, and target plants possess traits that allow them to benefit from this ameliorated environment.

Grazing Modulates the Multiscale Spatial Structure of Dryland Vegetation

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 7, July 2025.
We studied how grazing pressure affects plant spatial patterns in drylands by using satellite images, field plant size and abundance data, and a mathematical model. We found that increasing grazing pressure has opposite effects on vegetation spatial structure to those of aridity, which might be explained by the fact that grazing decreases plant size ...

Nanoarchitecture of CaV2.1 channels and GABAB receptors in the mouse hippocampus: Impact of APP/PS1 pathology

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 35, Issue 2, March 2025.
Nanoscale alteration of the molecular association between GABAB receptor and the CaV2.1 channel in actives zones the hippocampus of APP/PS1 mice. In wild‐type animals, the GABAB receptor and the CaV2.1 channel showed a high degree of co‐clustering in nanodomains (40 nm) of presynaptic active zones of axon terminals (at) establishing synapses with ...
