Esophageal motility in patients with esophageal caustic injurt
Gastroenterology, 1994There are few studies of esophageal function subsequent to the ingestion of lye. We investigated the esophageal motility of patients who had ingested liquid sodium hydroxide.Esophageal manometry was performed on 21 patients who [1-53 yr before the manometric examination (median: 13 yr)] had drunk 10-30 g of sodium hydroxide diluted in water.

Effect of clarithromycin on esophageal motility
Diseases of the Esophagus, 2000As clarithromycin (CLA), an antibiotic commonly used for Helicobacter pylori eradication, stimulates gastroduodenal motility, we investigated whether it also stimulates esophageal motility. In 15 normal subjects, esophageal motility was recorded using a low-compliance manometric system with two ports in the esophageal body, one port in the lower ...

Upper Esophageal Motility Disorders
Gastroenterology Clinics of North America, 1989This article begins with a summary of the anatomy and physiology of the upper esophageal region. The appropriate diagnostic tools used in the evaluation of upper esophageal motility disorders are then detailed including cineradiography, manometry, and other modalities.

Esophageal Motility in Asymptomatic Volunteers
Surgical Clinics of North America, 1983Different motility laboratories produce different results in regard to what is "normal." For this reason, it is important that each laboratory develop its own control studies. The results in 40 normal volunteers are presented and discussed in relation to esophageal motility.

Abstract The esophagus is the conduit for oral contents to pass from the oropharynx into the stomach. An intricate network of neuromuscular processes allows for the propulsion of food into the stomach while avoiding the passage of boluses into the respiratory system and inhibiting the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus ...

Esophageal motility disorder achalasia
Current Opinion in Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery, 2013Although not a common disease, the last several years have had exciting breakthroughs in better defining the pathophysiology of achalasia, classifying the disease with high-resolution manometry and potentially exciting new treatments. The introduction of high-resolution manometry with detailed assessment of lower esophageal sphincter function and ...

Esophageal Ultrasonography: A New View on Esophageal Motility
The American Journal of Gastroenterology, 2007Esophageal manometry has long been the gold standard for assessment of esophageal motility. Recently, high-frequency intraluminal ultrasonography (HFIUS) has been introduced to measure esophageal contractility and the thickness of esophageal muscle. Greater esophageal muscle thickness has been reported in patients with achalasia, diffuse spasm, and ...

The Management of Esophageal Motility Disorders
Hospital Practice, 1988Until now, management has remained heavily dependent on physical measures to stretch smooth muscle by dilation or surgical myotomy. Pharmacologic treatment has played a secondary but significant roleāone that may well be enhanced by renewed interest in the anticholinergics and the utilization of the calcium channel blockers.
