The American Journal of Surgery, 1979Abstract Esophageal perforation during a search for intramuscular vagal fibers may be prevented by careful palpation over the nasogastric tube. Compressed mucosa may be mistaken for nerve fibers if such precautions are neglected.

A primary histiocytic lymphoma arising in the esophagus and its resultant spontaneous perforation is reported in a 69-year-old female. To our knowledge esophageal perforation occurring as a complication of a primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the esophagus has not been previously reported.

Since 1971 we have treated 33 patients with esophageal perforation caused by instrumentation in 21 patients, trauma in six, and spontaneous perforation in six. Chest pain, fever, mediastinal air, and an abnormal esophagogram were frequent but not invariable findings.
