The Invalidity of the Laplace Law for Biological Vessels and of Estimating Elastic Modulus from Total Stress vs. Strain: a New Practical Method [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The quantification of the stiffness of tubular biological structures is often obtained, both in vivo and in vitro, as the slope of total transmural hoop stress plotted against hoop strain. Total hoop stress is typically estimated using the "Laplace law."

Acute Effects of the 5‐Hydroxytryptamine Type 4 Receptor Agonist Mosapride on Pharyngeal Swallowing Physiology in Adults

open access: yesThe Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The 5‐hydroxytryptamine type 4 receptor agonist mosapride is known to modulate esophageal peristalsis and enhance lower esophageal sphincter compliance. However, its impact on oropharyngeal swallowing physiology remains insufficiently characterized.

Gender effects on esophageal motility

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 1998
It has been suggested that there are no gender effects on esophageal motility. However, in previous studies the subjects did not perform multiple swallows and the quantitative features of esophageal contractions were not evaluated.

Esophageal striated muscle contractions in patients with Chagas' disease and idiopathic achalasia

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2002
Chagas' disease causes degeneration and reduction of the number of intrinsic neurons of the esophageal myenteric plexus, with consequent absent or partial lower esophageal sphincter relaxation and loss of peristalsis in the esophageal body.

Pharyngeal motility in patients submitted to type I thyroplasty

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology, 2021
Introduction: Type 1 thyroplasty is performed to improve glottis closure as well as dysphagic symptoms in patients with unilateral vocal fold immobility. Objectives: This study aims to compare the motility of the pharynx and upper esophageal sphincter in

GERD and Upper Aerodigestive Tract Cancer Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is highly prevalent, yet its association with upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) cancers beyond esophageal adenocarcinoma remains incompletely defined. This systematic review and meta‐analysis aimed to quantify the risk of specific UADT cancers in individuals with GERD.

Characteristics of Swallowing Function in People with Parkinson's Disease: A Scoping Review

open access: yesMovement Disorders, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Most individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) develop dysphagia during the course of their disease. It is crucial to comprehensively understand swallowing characteristics specific to PD for effective treatment. Objectives To systematically analyze and synthesize swallowing characteristics in people with PD compared with healthy ...

Review of nutrition management of pediatric intestinal pseudo‐obstruction

open access: yesNutrition in Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract Chronic intestinal pseudo‐obstruction (CIPO) is a rare, heterogeneous, and debilitating disorder characterized by profound intestinal dysmotility and severe nutrition challenges. Its presentation resembles that of mechanical bowel obstruction, but CIPO occurs in the absence of luminal obstruction.

Oestrogen and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Dynamics in Premenopausal and Postmenopausal Women: A Cross-sectional Study [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research
Introduction: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a common clinical disorder characterised by the reflux of stomach contents into the oesophagus, primarily due to the temporary relaxation of the Lower Oesophageal Sphincter (LES).
