Gastric Tube Esophagoplasty

After a short review of the historical development of replacement of the esophagus, the possibilities, techniques, and results of gastric-tube esophagoplasty are discussed. Ten of 14 patients were followed up for 14 years, two were lost to follow-up and two died. Fistulas, anastomotic strictures, and also reflux could be treated successfully.

Three cases of long-gap esophageal atresia were repaired using a technique that included a right extrapleural thoracotomy, preservation of the entire esophagus available, both anastomoses in the mediastinum, use of a short segment of colon, and preservation of the ileocecal valve.

Gastric-tube esophagoplasty in children

From 1979 to 1996, 19 patients underwent gastric-tube esophagoplasty. There were 10 boys and 9 girls, aged between 1 year 4 months and 4 years 11 months at the time of surgery. Jejunal esophagoplasty for carcinoma of the esophagus

Over a period of 13 years, 1,421 cases of pharyngoesophageal cancer were seen and treated. In 221 patients jejunal replacement of the esophagus—after resection or as bypass—was done. Technically, this procedure was possible in almost all patients including those who were obese.
