When Standard Newborn Screening Isn't Enough: Diagnostic Challenges in the Age of Globalization

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Cystic fibrosis (CF) newborn screening combines immunoreactive trypsin testing and targeted CFTR mutation panels. However, in Europe, most standard panels are designed primarily for common variants in Caucasian populations. We report a newborn, born in Spain from immigrant parents, with positive CF screening but initially normal genetic ...

Quantifying Carboxylate Burial in Synthetic Hydrophobic Pockets in Water

open access: yesChemistryEurope, Volume 4, Issue 5, May 2026.
How “buried” is a buried ion? Double mutant cycles quantify the cost of placing a carboxylate within a deep aromatic calix[4]pyrrole pocket in water. The penalty is only +1.3 to +3.0 kcal·mol−1 because water penetrates through cracks and the portal, creating a wet, high‐dielectric microenvironment.

Interactions Between Enrichment Planted Seedlings and Naturally Occurring Trees in Selectively Logged Lowland Dipterocarp Forest

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study analyzed the growth and survival of 721 seedlings in Malaysian Borneo in relation to their local neighbourhood of surrounding matrix trees. We found that both were positively influenced by canopy openness and the basal area of surrounding trees, highlighting the importance of light availability and the benefits of areas with more unlogged ...

Telomere Length Is Determined by Intrinsic Factors and Is Shortened During Drought Years in Gallotia galloti

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Telomere dynamics in ectotherms remain poorly understood relative to endotherms, yet are increasingly relevant in the context of climate change. Here, we used model‐averaged GLMMs and hierarchical partitioning to disentangle intrinsic and extrinsic drivers of relative telomere length in the Western‐Canaries Lizard (Gallotia galloti) across a 10‐year ...
