Forest cover estimation in Ireland using radar remote sensing: a comparative analysis of forest cover assessment methodologies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Quantification of spatial and temporal changes in forest cover is an essential component of forest monitoring programs. Due to its cloud free capability, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an ideal source of information on forest dynamics in countries ...

An essential spectra mapping theorem

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, 1976
AbstractLet T be a closed operator on a Hilbert Space H, such that α ϵ p(T), the resolvent of T. Set A = (T − αI)−1. For μ ≠ 0, define λ such that (λ − α)μ = 1. It is shown that λ ϵ essential spectra of T iff μ ϵ essential spectra of A for various definitions of the essential spectra. A number of immediate corollaries are then derived.

Essential Maps and Embeddings of Annuli in Nonorientable M 3 [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 1974
In this note we give an example which shows that the existence of an essential map of an annulus in a nonorientable 3 3 -manifold does not guarantee the existence of an essential embedding in that manifold.

Seed plant features, distribution patterns, diversity hotspots, and conservation gaps in Xinjiang, China

open access: yesNature Conservation, 2018
The flora in Xinjiang is unique. Decisions about biodiversity conservation and management based on seed plant diversity hotspots and conservation gaps in Xinjiang are essential to maintain this unique flora.

Seismic risk quantification and GIS-based seismic risk maps for Dubai-UAE_Dataset

open access: yesData in Brief, 2021
The data provided in this article quantifies the potential seismic losses in multi-story buildings located in Dubai, UAE. Besides, it developed GIS-based seismic risk maps, which form essential inputs towards the seismic resilience of buildings.

On essential singularities of meromorphic mappings

open access: yesMathematische Annalen, 1989
The three notions ``essential singularity of the i-th kind, \(i=1,2,3''\) of a meromorphic mapping are introduced: A meromorphic mapping \(f: X\to Y\), where \(X^ *\), Y are normal complex spaces and \(X\subset X^ *\) is an open subset, is said to have an essential singularity of the i-th kind in a point P lying on the border of X if f doesn't admit ...

Partially Isometric Immersions and Free Maps

open access: yes, 2010
In this paper we investigate the existence of ``partially'' isometric immersions. These are maps f:M->R^q which, for a given Riemannian manifold M, are isometries on some sub-bundle H of TM.

The unpredictably eruptive dynamics of spruce budworm populations in eastern Canada

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We examine historical population data for spruce budworm from several locations through the period 1930–1997, and use density‐dependent recruitment curves to test whether the pattern of population growth over time is more consistent with Royama's (1984; Ecological Monographs 54:429–462) linear R(t) model of harmonic oscillation at Green River New ...

On ω-essential mappings onto manifolds [PDF]

open access: yesFundamenta Mathematicae, 1991
Essential mappings have played an important role in homotopy theory as well as in continua theory. A mapping \(f: X\to M\) from a compactum into a manifold is said to be essential provided every admissible deformation of \(f\) is surjective, while a mapping \(f: X\to M\) is said to be \(\omega\)- essential provided that \(f\times \hbox{id}_ k: X\times ...
