What are biology and ecosystem Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) and how can they be used in conservation?

Imagine if we had some key biology and ecosystem variables that are collected in the same way, and made openly available. Then we would be able to use this comparable data from around the world to advance our understanding of the ocean but also to create products that would be very useful in conservation.
