Structural essentialism and determinism

open access: yes, 2005
The paper tries to develop Bartels's modern essentialism as a structural-role theory of identity for spacetime points. I adopt Hoefer's idea of denying primitive identity for this theory and apply it to GTR and prerelativistic physics to find different ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

The Essential Spectrum of the Essentially Isometric Operator

open access: yesCanadian Mathematical Bulletin, 2014
AbstractLet T be a contraction on a complex, separable, infinite dimensional Hilbert space and let σ(T) (resp. σe(T)) be its spectrum (resp. essential spectrum). We assume that T is an essentially isometric operator; that is, IH -T*T is compact. We show that if D\σ(T) ≠ Ø, then for every f from the disc-algebraσe(f(T)) = f(σe(T))where D is the open ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

On the functional origins of essentialism

open access: yes, 2001
This essay examines the proposal that psychological essentialism results from a history of natural selection acting on human representation and inference systems. It has been argued that the features that distinguish essentialist representational systems

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
