Using long‐term data series to design adequate protected areas that ensure the conservation of inconspicuous small petrel species

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 12, Page 2586-2601, December 2023., 2023
Our study highlights the importance of analysing long time series and ESDMs to design adequate protected areas, which ensure the conservation of small and highly mobile species such as storm petrels. Our results should be considered by decision‐makers to prioritise and update marine protected areas, while incorporating the dynamic nature of the ocean ...

Plant‐based foods as meat and fat substitutes

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 11, Issue 9, Page 4898-4911, September 2023., 2023
Plant‐based protein alternatives are considered to be more sustainable than animal proteins. Plant‐based proteins are suggested to have lower nutritional quality than animal proteins. Plant‐based meat or fat substitutes need to mimic their animal‐based counterparts in terms of texture and sensorial attributes for consumer acceptance.

Two cases of cystic echinococcosis reported from al‐Andalus cemeteries (southern Iberia): Insights into zoonotic diseases in Islamic Medieval Europe

open access: yesInternational Journal of Osteoarchaeology, Volume 33, Issue 5, Page 910-919, September/October 2023., 2023
Abstract The identification of a calcified hydatid cyst in the bioarcheological record is key to the diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis (i.e., hydatid disease), a parasitic infection caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. This zoonosis can be linked to human–canid interactions, given the reproductive cycle of the parasite (from canids to ...

Evaluation of structural and functional properties of citrus pectin film enriched with green tea extract

open access: yesPolymer Engineering &Science, Volume 63, Issue 8, Page 2522-2533, August 2023., 2023
The antioxidant efficacy and the influence of green tea extract (GTE) on the mechanical, barrier, and morphological properties of pectin films were investigated in this research. The results showed that increased the antioxidant abilities of the film without a significant impact on its functionality for as a stand‐alone packaging film.

A nozzle simulation chip toward high‐throughput formation of curcumin‐loaded zein nanoparticles with tunable properties

open access: yesJournal of Food Science, Volume 88, Issue 8, Page 3524-3537, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Size of nanoparticle (NP) is a crucial factor in determining its applicability to various fields. This study aimed to develop a nozzle chip for the scalable formation of self‐assembled curcumin‐loaded zein NPs with tunable properties. A four‐factor (zein concentration in dispersed phase, ethanol concentration in continuous phase, flow rate ...

Adaptive Fuzzy Logic‐Based Control and Management of Photovoltaic Systems with Battery Storage

open access: yesInternational Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Renewable energy sources (RESs) such as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are increasingly used as distributed generation for replacing the conventional energy. At the same time, energy storage systems like battery (BAT) must be applied for maintaining the balance between fluctuating energy production and load consumption.
