Is There Life After Death? The Role of Standing Dead Phorophytes in Supporting Tropical Epiphyte Diversity

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 4, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Global increases in tree mortality from climate change and land‐use are altering forest structures, impacting canopy‐dwelling plants like vascular epiphytes, which depend on host trees (phorophytes). When a phorophyte dies standing, it becomes a snag, the local substrate conditions change and microclimatic exposure may increase, particularly ...

Pathways of Introduction and Expansion Dynamics of Non‐Native Species in an Island Ecosystem

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Biological invasions are a global challenge, largely driven by human‐mediated introductions beyond species' native ranges. Island ecosystems are particularly vulnerable, as invasions have caused some of the most profound and detrimental impacts on native and endemic biota.

Challenges and Advances Driving Studies on Aquatic Insects of the Order Coleoptera

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquatic beetles (Coleoptera) are known for their high taxonomic and ecological diversity and their sensitivity to environmental changes, making them key bioindicators in ecological assessments. However, numerous knowledge gaps persist globally.

Disentangling Environmental, Spatial and Niche Influences on Fish Beta Diversity Along the Sandy Beaches of an Amazonian River

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Beta diversity is an important descriptor of community structuring and it plays a crucial role for understanding the patterns and processes shaping biodiversity at multiple spatial extents. We investigated the influence of local, spatial, landscape factors and niche characteristics on fish beta diversity along the Acre River in Acre, Brazil ...

Climate Predicts Tree Dispersal Strategies Across Brazil's Ecosystems

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 35, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim We investigate the distribution of dispersal modes—endozoochory (via animal ingestion), synzoochory (via animal seed accumulation) and anemochory (via wind)—and seed mass of woody plants across Brazilian ecosystems, testing whether their relative abundance in local plant communities could be predicted by climate, edaphic factors and ...

Impacts of land use change on diaspore‐dispersing ant assemblages in southwestern Amazonia

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 19, Issue 4, Page 908-917, July 2026.
Land use changes shift ant assemblages, more intensive land uses are dominated by generalist and open habitat specialist species engaging in group foraging. The diaspore removal rates cannot differ, but the quality of dispersal was lower in disturbed habitats.

Foraging Ecology and Fisheries Interactions of Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) Inferred From Strandings in Western Iberian Atlantic Waters

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is a resident species along the Portuguese mainland coast, yet knowledge of its stranding patterns and feeding ecology is scarce. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of strandings (n = 264, from 1980 to 2019) and feeding ecology based on stomach content analysis (n = 43 from 1997 to
