The Horseshoe+ Estimator of Ultra-Sparse Signals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We propose a new prior for ultra-sparse signal detection that we term the "horseshoe+ prior." The horseshoe+ prior is a natural extension of the horseshoe prior that has achieved success in the estimation and detection of sparse signals and has been ...

Estimation of Vitamin A [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1936
EARLY in 1937, the results of biological and spectroscopic tests for the vitamin A content of a specimen of halibut liver oil and of a concentrate prepared from it were published in NATURE1. Ten laboratories participated in this co-operative experiment.

FoxO1 signaling in B cell malignancies and its therapeutic targeting

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
FoxO1 has context‐specific tumor suppressor or oncogenic character in myeloid and B cell malignancies. This includes tumor‐promoting properties such as stemness maintenance and DNA damage tolerance in acute leukemias, or regulation of cell proliferation and survival, or migration in mature B cell malignancies.

An Artificial Neural Network for the Low-Cost Prediction of Soot Emissions

open access: yesEnergies, 2020
Soot formation in combustion systems is a growing concern due to its adverse environmental and health effects. It is considered to be a tremendously complicated phenomenon which includes multiphase flow, thermodynamics, heat transfer, chemical kinetics ...

Insights into PI3K/AKT signaling in B cell development and chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Review explores how the phosphoinositide 3‐kinase and protein kinase B pathway shapes B cell development and drives chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a common blood cancer. It examines how signaling levels affect disease progression, addresses treatment challenges, and introduces novel experimental strategies to improve therapies and patient outcomes.

Spectral Targeting Estimation of $λ$-GARCH models [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
This paper presents a novel estimator of orthogonal GARCH models, which combines (eigenvalue and -vector) targeting estimation with stepwise (univariate) estimation. We denote this the spectral targeting estimator. This two-step estimator is consistent under finite second order moments, while asymptotic normality holds under finite fourth order moments.

Diphthamide synthesis is linked to the eEF2‐client chaperone machinery

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The diphthamide modification of eukaryotic translation elongation factor 2 (eEF2) is important for accurate protein synthesis. We addressed the potential coordination of de novo eEF2 synthesis with simultaneous or subsequent diphthamide modification. Our work reveals that the co‐chaperones Hgh1 and Cpr7, which are known to support folding of nascent ...

Online Internal Temperature Sensors in Lithium-Ion Batteries: State-of-the-Art and Future Trends

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemical Engineering, 2022
The temperature of the lithium-ion battery is a crucial measurement during usage for better operation, safety and health of the battery. In-situ monitoring of the internal temperature of the cells is an important input for temperature control of battery ...

Source Enumeration via RMT Estimator Based on Linear Shrinkage Estimation of Noise Eigenvalues Using Relatively Few Samples [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Estimating the number of signals embedded in noise is a fundamental problem in array signal processing. The classic RMT estimator based on random matrix theory (RMT) tends to under-estimate the number of signals as it does not consider the non-negligible bias term among eigenvalues for finite sample size.

The horseshoe estimator for sparse signals

open access: yes, 2010
This paper proposes a new approach to sparsity, called the horseshoe estimator, which arises from a prior based on multivariate-normal scale mixtures. We describe the estimator's advantages over existing approaches, including its robustness, adaptivity ...
