Wood density variation across an Andes‐to‐Amazon elevational gradient

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 9, Page 2370-2385, September 2025.
We study how wood density varies along a 3500‐m elevational gradient, spanning from the Andean tree line to the Amazon basin. Our results reveal that wood density decreases from low to mid‐elevations, then increases toward the tree line. These patterns underscore the influence of species composition, life forms such as tree ferns, and local ...

Complex relationship between soil fungi and conservation value assessments in boreal forests

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 4, August 2025.
Abstract Large‐scale industrial forestry is a threat to biodiversity and imposes long‐lasting changes to many forested biomes. Preserving forests as reserves is an important component of the strategy for safeguarding forest biodiversity. Yet, the selection of forests of high biodiversity value is usually based on proxies (i.e., subsets of aboveground ...

Symplastic and apoplastic pathways for local distribution of silicon in rice leaves

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 247, Issue 3, Page 1280-1289, August 2025.
Summary Silicon (Si) is highly accumulated in both the leaf blade and sheath of rice, but the transporter mediating the local distribution of Si between these two tissues remains unidentified. We investigated the role of an aquaporin, OsLsi6, in the local distribution of Si in rice leaves.

Trees, society, and the path toward resilient ecosystems

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 889-893, July 2025.
Over 3 trillion trees occupy the Earth's land surface, mostly in tropical and subtropical forests. These trees provide vital ecosystem services, such as climate regulation, carbon sequestration, and habitat and food provision. Trees are also deeply interconnected with humans, offering social and cultural values.

The conceptual design changes triggered by timber boards [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
After the introduction of timber boards as diaphragms in light-frame construction opened the way to modern timber construction, three major design changes would follow: the elements become multifunctional, they can work structurally in two directions ...

Terroir and rootstock effects on leaf shape in California Central Valley vineyards

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 1110-1122, July 2025.
The innumerable effects of terroir—including climate, soil, microbial environment, biotic interactions, and cultivation practice—collectively alter plant performance and production. A more direct agricultural intervention is grafting, in which genetically distinct shoot and root genotypes are surgically combined to create a chimera that alters shoot ...
