Estrus detection and estrus characteristics in housed and pastured Holstein–Friesian cows

Theriogenology, 2010
This study compared three methods of estrus detection and characteristics of standing estrus between dairy cows kept in cubicle housing and fed a total mixed ration diet (HOUSED treatment) and those kept at pasture with concentrate ration supplementation (PASTURE treatment).

Control of Estrus in Gilts with a Progestogen

Journal of Animal Science, 1979
Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a synthetic progestogen, allyl trenbolone, for control of estrus and ovulation in gilts. Estrus was effectively synchronized with 33 of 38 gilts exhibiting estrus 2 to 7 days after last progestogen feeding.

Nonpuberal Estrus in Beef Heifers2,3

Journal of Animal Science, 1986
The frequency of occurrence of behavioral estrus without subsequent development of functional luteal tissue (termed nonpuberal estrus, NPE), was determined in 43 Simmental X Hereford-Brahman heifers. Blood samples were collected weekly from the start of the study to first behavioral estrus and then daily from d 1 (d 0 = estrus) through d 14 following ...

Estrus Suppression in Dogs

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 2018
Since 1952, scientists have studied estrus suppression in dogs. Estrus suppression in dogs must be safe and reliable. Medications used for estrus suppression in bitches include gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists, GnRH antagonists, progestogens, and androgens.

Chemical inhibition of estrus in the beagle

Theriogenology, 1976
Abstract Twenty anestrus bitches were dosed orally for 90 days with vehicle or 0.9 mg/kg b.w. of 6,6-spiroethylene-19-nor-spiroxenone. All dogs were due in estrus during the test period based on previous average estrous cycle lengths. Estrus was prevented in 100% of the drug-treated bitches.

Time of onset of estrus in gilts

Theriogenology, 1986
An experiment was conducted to determine when, during a 24-h period, gilts show the onset of behavioral estrus. Beginning on Day 16 of their first estrous cycle, 42 crossbred gilts were observed at 0600, 1200, 1800, and 2400 h for the onset of their second estrus. Fifty-five percent of the gilts had shown onset of estrus by 0600 h.

Induction of estrus by electrical stimulation

American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1959
Using the apparatus designed for the electroejaculation of bulls, the reproductive organs of anestrous cows were electrically stimulated through the rectal wall. Forty-three per cent of the cows which had been in anestrus for 50 or more days after calving came in heat within 7 days after an electrical stimulation as compared to 13% of the controls ...

Synchronization of estrus and fertility in Zebu beef heifers treated with three estrus synchronization protocols

Theriogenology, 1999
The effects on estrus and fertility of 3 estrus synchronization protocols were studied in Brahman beef heifers. In Treatment 1 (PGF protocol; n=234), heifers received 7.5 mg, i.m. prostianol on Day 0 and were inseminated after observed estrus until Day 5. Treatment 2 (10-d NOR protocol; n = 220) consisted of norgestomet (NOR; 3 mg, s.c.

Estrus characterization in superovulated cattle

Theriogenology, 1993
Abstract Based on frequent examinations per rectum and on external signs of estrus, the intensity of estrus was characterized in 107 superovulated dairy cows and heifers. Three intensity groups were defined: strong (n=57), moderate (n=34), and weak (n=16). Frequent blood samples were obtained for analyses of estradiol-17β and LH.

Seasonal effects on behavioral estrus signs and estrus detection efficiency in Holstein heifers

Indian Journal of Animal Research, 2016
In the study, 234 Holstein heifers were observed visually during a one-year period and 1622 estrus records were used to determine seasonal effects on behavioral estrus signs and estrus detection efficiency. Estrus records were classified as standing, mounting, vaginal mucus discharging, and the other estrus signs.
