The depth specific significiance, relative abundance and phylogeography of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) in marine and estuarine sediments

open access: yes, 2009
PhDThe availability of fixed forms of nitrogen is critical to the regulation of primary production. Until recently, denitrification (the sequential reduction of NO3 -, through NO2 - , to di-nitrogen gas) was recognised as the only significant pathway

Literature Review of Unconsolidated Sediment in San Francisco Bay and Nearby Pacific Ocean Coast

open access: yesSan Francisco Estuary and Watershed Science, 2009
A review of the geologic literature regarding sedimentation in the San Francisco Bay estuarine system shows that the main part of the bay occupies a structural tectonic depression that developed in Pleistocene time. Eastern parts, including San Pablo Bay

Climate change and variability drive increasing exposure of marine heatwaves across US estuaries

open access: yesScientific Reports
Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are among the greatest threats to marine ecosystems, and while substantial advances have been made in oceanic MHWs, little is known about estuarine MHWs.

Loss of nutrients from catchments and their ecological impacts in the Peel-Harvey estuarine system, Western Australia

open access: yes, 1992
Rivers draining coastal-plain soils with a low phosphorus-binding capacity load nutrients into the estuarine system in winter. Phosphorus is largely trapped by diatom blooms and recycled via the sediments to support growth, during the warmer months, of ...

Trends in thunderstorm days, lightning activity, squalls and the environmental factors in Hong Kong

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
This study analyses trends in Hong Kong's convective weather using long‐term observer‐based and shorter‐term instrument‐based data. Annual thunderstorm days increased significantly by 1.9 days decade−1 in 1947–2024, notably in June–September, consistent with increasingly favourable warm‐season environments for thunderstorms.

Using a live‐streaming webcam to assess the behavioural responses of waterbirds to changes in the density of swans Cygnus spp.

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Wildlife research has benefitted from the development of new methods that allow data to be collected remotely, with less disturbance to focal animals. The proliferation of livestreaming webcams, for example, those used by nature reserves for public engagement purposes, have offered new possibilities for the study of wildlife behaviour.

Histological localization of the mucus-secreting cell, sacciform cell, and pigment cell in the integument system of the grunting toadfish, Allenbatrachus grunniens (Linnaeus, 1758)

open access: yesSongklanakarin Journal of Science and Technology (SJST)
With limited observations, one of the major remaining questions in toadfish biology is how the integument structure helps them cope with a harsh estuarine environment.
